2011 French Open Men's and Women's Singles

On the women's side of the quarterfinals of the French Open, Maria Sharapova defeated Andrea Petkovic 6-0, 6-3 on Wednesday. Sharapova now returns back to the semifinals for the first time in three years. If she wins the French Open, then she will win the Grand Slam. In her match against Petkovic, Sharapova won the opening eight games and overcame two breaks in order to win the second set. Maria Sharapova is now 11-3 in her Grand Slam quarterfinals. All of her three losses came at Roland Garros. Petkovic was having trouble with her serves against Sharapova. Maria Sharapova will now face Li Na of China, who defeated Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-2. Li Na committed 18 unforced errors, which were five less than her Belarusian opponent. Azarenka is now 0-4 in Grand Slam quarterfinals. The defending champion, Francesca Schiavone and number 11, Marion Bartoli will face one another in the other semifinal game.
On the Men's side of tennis, Rafael Nadal won in straight sets against Robin Soderling, 6-4, 6-1, and 7-6 to advance to the semifinals. Nadel avenged his loss to Soderling in the 2009 French Open. Rafael Nadal dominated the whole game, but Soderling made the game competitive in the third set. If Rafael Nadal wins the French Open, it will be his sixth title. He will face Andy Murray in the semifinals, who beat Juan Ignacio Chela, 7-6, 7-5, and 6-2 in straight sets. Murray victory made him the second British man to reach the French Open semifinals. The first one was Bunny Austin in 1937. The other semifinal match will be between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
