A medal night in Australia
February 16th 2010 06:48
Last night was an unusually good night for sports lovers of Australia with the awarding of the Allan Border Medal (Cricket) and the Johnny Warren Medal (soccer). The girls came out and it was a good evening with some very interesting results
The Allan Border Medal
The Allan Border Medal is a tradition on the cricket calander. It is awarded to the person that accumulates the most votes combined in the Test and One-Day arena. There have been years where it's been tied but it always provides a fashion controversy with the red-carpet producing some unusual incidebts/fashion. Last year it was Mitchell Johnson's girlfriend Jessica Braitch who created a stir when an untimely gust of wind revealed her knickers. This year it was Nathan Bracken's wife Haley who created a massive stir with what could only be described as an unusual outfit
What do you think about this dress? Discuss and comment.
Meanwhile I've lost track of what this is supposed to be about so I best get back to it.
The Allan Border Medal was a thrilling contest as per usual and naturally besides that, there are also numerous other awards concerning state, test, womens etc.
At the end of the night, the results were:
Allan Border Medal: Shane Watson
Test Player of the Year: Simon Katich
One-Day International player of the Year: Shane Watson
State Cricketer of the Year: Michael Klinger
Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year: Jon Hastings
Women's International Cricketer of the Year: Shelley Nitschke
Johnny Warren Medal
The Johnny Warren Medal is awarded to the best player in the Hyundai A-League. It is named after the great man himself who passed away in 2004 after a long battle with cancer. Johnny Warren from the 1950s until his death was Australian Soccer. He always looked to get the game more exposure and he was a big fan of South American Football. He played for Canterbury and St George in the old state leagues and coached at Canberra Citty in the old NSL back in 1977 and 1978. After that he spent many long years working at SBS and he is sorely missed by all.
Anyway at the end of the night, the results were as follows:
Johnny Warren Medal: Carlos Hernandez (Melbourne)
A-League Coach of the Year: Ernie Merrick (Melbourne)
A-League Goal of the Year: Archie Thompson (Melbourne vs Gold Coast)
Young Player of the Year: Tommy Oar (Brisbane)
Golden Boot (top goalscorer): Shane Smeltz 19 goals (Gold Coast)
Goalkeeper of the Year: Eugene Galekovic (Adelaide United)
Fair Play award: Sydney FC
Referee of the Year: Strebre Delovski
So ends the review of 2 of the premier awards
