AFL: Adam Yze goal of the year
May 17th 2007 23:59
Today's Sport Talk Highlight Reel features one of the genuine Goal of the Year contenders of 2007.
Melbourne's Adam Yze kicked a left foot banana goal from the boundary line against Fremantle at the MCG in round four.
The banana kick defied most of the laws of physics, and logic, by bending back the wrong way as it approached the goal line.
Take a look:
Amazing, simply amazing. The fact the Fremantle defenders were bearing down on Yze just before he kicked the ball makes it even more impressive.
It was a left foot banana, it should have curled to the left. But the ball swayed to the right as it floated towards the goal.
Yze's goal is heads and shoulders above any other this season, an effort from Essendon's Alwyn Davey comes close, but this is a clear stand out.
What do you think?

It will be a contender for goal of the century ...
That's what I think ...
I've seen some great goals over the years ... but that one takes some beating ...
Jason Akermanis would argue that his is up there with the best of them ... (and fair enough ... so it was ...
And a few of Gary Ablett's take some beating ... (the one he kicked with Dustin Fletcher bearing down on him comes to mind ...
But it's right up there with the best goals I've ever seen ...
They should really separate goal of the year into two categories .. (Run and Goal of the Year ... and Goal Under Pressure of the Year ... they're two distinctly different types of goals ... both great ... similar but different ...

That Yze, goal when it went through, i could have sworn that it actually crossed the goal line like a drop punt. So although it left the boot a banana it became a goal as something else.
My goal with the rolled up socks and Yze's banana that wasn't: equal.

Great idea about the two categories. Because it seems that kicking under pressure, after a couple of bounces is a lot harder than kicking off a few steps.
For some when reason when players are running flat out they can't balance up enough to kick straight.
How many end-to-end goals have been ruined by a bad finishing touch?
Aker's was terrific, but Yze left foot defied reasonable logic!

The fabled 'rolled up socks goal on the run' is one of those 'this is better than sex' moments of life.
I had a closer look at the Yze goal, the spin of the ball did seem to warp as it dropped, maybe the reason it drifted back towards the goal. It became a mongrel in mid-air?
Luckily sock-balls have a tendency not to spin at all, so blokes must rely on skill alone to drill one through the laundry door.
