AFL: Gary Moorcroft Mark of the Year
May 19th 2007 08:09
Sport Talk Highlight Reel:
Confucious would say a mark that ends the career of an AFL player must have been a bloody good grab.
As was the case with Essendon utility Gary Moorcraft in round 14, 2001 against the Western Bulldogs at the Telstra Dome.
A seemingly innocuous Scott Lucas snap was tranformed into the AFL's Mark of the Century.
Take a look:
Wow! It never ceases to amaze. Moorcroft's launch over Brad Johnson was a genuine jump, too, no hands, no 'surfing the pack', pure elevation.
Unfortunately, it was the last good game Moorcroft, a premiership player for Essendon in 2000, would ever play.
A chronic hip injury, caused by his harsh reintroduction with the Telstra Dome turf, plagued the 'red keg' for the rest of his career.
He was delisted by the Bombers in 2002 after playing 95 games, and was drafted by Melbourne where he played three games before suffering a career ending knee injury.
Moorcroft played a total of 98 games and kicked 51 goals.
But it was his amazing mark, the best most of us have ever seen, that will live on forever.
The best mark of all time?
