AFL: Stephen Silvagni knocked out by Darren Milburn

May 26th 2007 02:04
**WARNING**

Today's Sport Talk Highlight Reel features some pretty nasty footage. View at your own delight.... I mean peril.

**WARNING**

Welcome back to Sport Talk! As aforementioned the Highlight Reel below is sickening stuff. Carlton legend Stephen Silvagni is knocked out cold by Geelong utility Darren Milburn.

Geelong defender Darren Milburn contests the ball against West Coast's Ashley Sampi
Geelong defender Darren Milburn gives Ashley Sampi something to think about. Milburn is the focus of today's Sport Talk Highlight Reel.

It was Round 22, 2001, Carlton v Geelong at Princes Park. The entire game was spiteful, but the hit on Silvagni, as he backed back with the flight of the ball was truly one of the ugliest incidents in the history of the AFL, probably just behind Nathan Brown's broken leg a few years back.

Milburn's bump on Silvagni is shown (along with graphic replays) about half way through the clip. Look out for the irrate dude banging on the Geelong bench towards the end.

Enjoy the music, too!

Take a look:

It really did put the pole back into pole-axed. Silvagni was pulsating on the ground like a transplanted heart. It seemed as though he would never walk, talk or wipe his own behind again.

Amazingly, Milburn was suspended for only three weeks by the AFL tribunal after pleading guilty to charging.

What about attempted decapitation? He nearly killed Sos! Just goes to show much the game of Aussie Rules has changed in six years. The same incident today would cost the offending player about six or seven weeks, minimum.

But maybe Milburn did learn his lesson. The Geelong defender has not been reported or suspended since!

The best or worst bump in the history of the game?

I was watching this game on TV, this incident completely stunned me. I haven't liked Geelong since the '95 grand final, with Gary Hocking attacking Craig Bradley's head 3 times (in one incident) because Bradley read the ball better. This took the cake though, Silvagni almost had the ball in his hands when Milburn began his jump, serious damage could have been dealt, Milburn should have received a much heavier sentence.
