AFL Premiership Season 2007
March 21st 2007 01:07
Welcome back to Sport Talk!
Firstly, thank you to all the new readers clicking on, Sport Talk is enjoying its best readership since its inception. A big thanks and hope you all keeo posting and start leaving some comments!
The wait is almost over... I enjoy cricket, but too much of something good is always enough. The footy is just about back!
And in 2007, it's back on Channel 7. The broadcast move from Channel 9 and Channel 10 to Channel 7 and Channel 10 is going to be the biggest shake-up of football coverage. Channel 9 did revolutionise the coverage when the grabbed the rights and really wrestled football into the 21st century.
Now with 7 back on board, can the AFL coverage, particularly Friday night footall remain a ratings success? Channel 7's first NAB Cup coverage was a disaster. Bruce and Dennis still had the chemistry but it was the cut-aways and throws that made the coverage 'cringe-worthy'.
It was a tough gig, the game was in Darwin, and it was 7's first crack. But can they fight back?
Since 'that' Friday night, Channel 7 has improved. Cometti is much, much better and seems to have been given a broader creative licence than when he was with 9. Or perhaps Den just needs to keep reinventing himself to stay fresh.
Bruce McAvaney is a star and will only take one or two premiership rounds to return to the fore of football commentary.
So what about the season, let's take a look at round one.
Melbourne Demons vs St Kilda Saints MCG Friday, March 30
Kangaroos vs Collingwood Magpies MCG Saturday, March 31
Fremantle Dockers vs Port Adelaide Power Subiaco Oval Saturday, March 31
Brisbane Lions vs Hawthorn Hawks The Gabba Saturday, March 31
Sydney Swans vs West Coast Eagles Telstra Stadium Saturday, March 31
Adelaide Crows vs Essendon Bombers AAMI Stadium Sunday, April 1
Western Bulldogs vs Geelong Cats Telstra Dome Sunday, April 1
Carlton Blues vs Richmond Tigers MCG Sunday, April 1
Six of the home sides should win. Melbourne, Fremantle, Brisbane, Western, Carlton and Sydney. I think Essendon are a chance to beat Adelaide. The Bombers have a history of starting seasons well (they beat Sydney in round one last year) and they have an unknown element with the number of young recruits at the club.
With Fletcher, McPhee, Michael, Lucas, Lloyd, Hird and the Johnson brothers fit again. Essendon look strong in 2007.
If Matthew Lloyd can kick six goals, the Bombers can win.
The season is in readiness - bring on the footy!
