AFL Round 1 - Round One Tips Best Bets
March 26th 2009 06:41
Put on the party pies and heat up the footy franks! AFL is back for 2009 and Sport Talk will once again post the tips, whispers and best bets for each and every round of the AFL 2009 Premiership Season.
The first bounce of season 2009 is tonight at a sold-out MCG, where Carlton take on the Tigers. It's Judd vs Cousins in front of 90,000 feral fans.
Bring.It.On.
Let's check out the round one games and match odds (Betfair).
2.06 Richmond v Carlton 1.93
3.5 Hawthorn v Geelong 1.39
1.39 Collingwood v Adelaide 3.7
1.31 Brisbane v West Coast 4.3
1.42 St Kilda v Sydney 3.3
3.4 Melbourne v North Melbourne 1.38
1.31 Port Adelaide v Essendon 4
1.86 Fremantle v Western Bulldogs 2.1
Carlton have been massive drifters in the match tonight. $1.50 out to $1.98 early on Thursday morning.
I took $1.80 and will load up again at $1.90. Without Cousins the Tigers would still be hovering around the $2.40 mark. I don't think one-man can beat a team that has consistently improved every year for the past three.
Back the Blues with confidence tonight - that's Sport Talk's Best Bet of the Round.
Looking elsewhere for value, a small multiple stands out. West Coast to beat Brisbane, into Essendon to beat Port Adelaide. This requires to sides travelling to win, unlikely, but if it's going to happen, it will happen in round one.
The Bombers won at AAMI round one last year, and although I think Port have improved their list, it will take a month to get it working.
Essendon represent value at $4, and have a recent history of fast starts.
In the West on Sunday, the Western Bulldogs look more than ready to beat the Dockers comfortably. Bulldogs massive overs at $2.1.
Geelong, Collingwood, St Kilda and North Melbourne will all come away winners in round one.
Good luck in round one! Post your tips and bets below!

I think the Tigers are a good chance with Fevola playing with a slight injury. If he doesn't fire, which isn't uncommon, I can see them snatching the win.

Tigers have been backed off the map on Betfair though, and smart money always means something is going on!
I'll be watching with great interest mate.
