AFL Round 17 - Tips, Best Bets
July 25th 2008 01:44
Welcome back to Sport Talk. Round 17 of the AFL season is upon us, and suddenly, the finals are just around the corner.
The battle for a top four spot intensifies in the next month, and this will make tipping, and betting, difficult.
It's a good time to sit down with the current ladder, analyse the points and percentage and have a think about which teams will finish where.
If you can nail the top four, betting and tipping will be easy. St Kilda are flying into September with four wins on the trot, but there's a good chance they'll choke on the final stretch. Up against West Coast this weekend, the Eagles are not without a chance.
On the other hand, persistent in-house problems have dogged the Coasters chances, and might pave the way for a Saints' victory.
Let's check out the AFL Round 17 fixture, odds and Sport Talk's tips (in bold).
Hawthorn $3.25 vs Geelong $1.33 - MCG
Essendon $3.65 vs Collingwood $1.26 - MCG
West Coast Eagles $5.50 vs St Kilda $1.13 - Subiaco
Richmond $1.60 vs Brisbane Lions $2.25 - Telstra Dome
Sydney Swans $1.40 vs Adelaide $2.80 - SCG
Port Adelaide $1.53 vs Fremantle $2.40 - AAMI Stadium
Melbourne $4.75 vs Kangaroos $1.16 - MCG
Western Bulldogs $1.28 vs Carlton $3.45 - Telstra Dome
Geelong will prove too strong for Hawthorn in tonight's heavyweight bout at the MCG. I just can't see the Hawks getting any closer than three goals. Sport Talk's Best Bet of the Round rarely strays into odds-on territory, but the Cats are irresistible.
Sport Talk's Best Bet of the round is Geelong to beat Hawthorn at odds above $1.40. Shop around before the game, Betfair traders will offer $1.40 and above, representing sensational short value. Back Geelong to lead at quarter-time and half-time.
Watch your margin and line bets, I'm not convinced the Hawks will stop a 39.5 point blow out in junk time. Stick to quarter-by-quarter and match odds.
Looking to betting in other AFL Round 17 games, Brisbane represent amazing value at $2.30 and above against Richmond. The Tigers were almost rolled by an injury-depleted Essendon last week, and look to be tiring in the run home. On the other hand, Brisbane are improving every week, and as a colleague of mine asserted - "JB is ready to have a big one".
Fremantle have the got the ability to beat Port Adelaide, and at $2.40 look a good option to include on your betting slip.
A Brisbane-Fremantle double could return a nice dividend if you're willing to back two outsiders!
That's all for this week. Happy tipping and punting. Post your thoughts and comments below.

I like the Geelong bet and I think Brisbane represents the value bet of the round as well.
