Round 19 AFL Tips, Best Bets
August 8th 2008 01:59
As Eddie McGuire famously says, "It's been a big week in football".
For poor old Ed, it's probably been more a case of a bad week in football than anything else.
The Pies were in all sorts of bother earlier this week with Heath Shaw, Alan Didak and Rhyce Shaw all suspended for drunken deeds on Sunday night.
If you live under a rock and missed it, click here to read the details.
The Beijing Olympics roll into action tonight, and for Melbourne-based AFL fans, that is great news. It means the Friday night fixture, Melbourne v Geelong, will be beamed live from the MCG into our homes.
Expect a riot from fans of Better Homes and Gardens. The grey-rinse brigade will be filthy, not only missing out on a night of apple turnovers and weed killers, but they'll then have to sit through four hours of opening ceremony after the footy.
Oldies aside, let's have a look at this week's AFL Round 19 matches, odds, tips and best bets.
Sport Talk's selections are in bold.
Melbourne $20 v Geelong $1.04
Carlton $1.30 v Port Adelaide $4
Hawthorn $1.26 v Brisbane Lions $4.60
Collingwood $2.44 v St Kilda $1.55
Sydney $1.50 v Fremantle $2.96
Kangaroos $2.38 v Western Bulldogs $1.70
Adelaide $1.61 v Richmond $2.52
West Coast $2.70 v Essendon $1.54
Collingwood have an air of unknown surrounding them heading into a match against St Kilda on Saturday night. The Pies were savaged internally and externally through the week. How will they respond? The Collingwood of old would come out and win, but I feel too many things are going wrong inside the Lexus Centre for four points to eventuate.
St Kilda will smell blood, and Collingwood have been terribly undisciplined in the past few weeks. Provided the Saints turn up to play, the Magpies are gone, and so too their season.
Sport Talk's Best Bet of the Round is St Kilda to beat Collingwood at $1.55. Back the Saints with confidence.
Take the line too, Saints to win by more than 8.5 points at $1.97. Given the match odds, this is phenomenal value.
Looking to other games, Western Bulldogs will overcome the Kangaroos with ease, take the $1.70 about the Bulldogs and get in line to collect.
The Bombers are near-certainties to serve the Eagles another loss at home, but I'm not confident enough to suggest a bet. Essendon beat Fremantle at Subiaco earlier in the season, and are the in-form side of the competition. West Coast are in tatters and looking to next season.
If Bomber young gun Kyle Reimers had not been injured last week, I'd be suggesting something sizable on the Dons to keep their finals hopes alive.
That's all for this week, as usual, feel free to post tips, thoughts and bets below.

Think you are on the money with the Saints bet. I need to pull a few back in my tipping comp so for some reason I think Freo may be a rough chance against the Swans.
Pav needs to kick 8 though!

Forget the grey-rinse brigade, the recipe for pumpkin soup hasn't changed for 100 years, they'll survive (just).
Bring on the live footy!
Fremantle may lack the class factor, but they'll make up for it in attack on the ball. The Swans often look lazy too!

I'm writing off the finals, though. Don't think this is our year.
