AFL Round 2 Review

April 7th 2010 07:43
Due to time committments and constraints, I will only be doing brief reviews on each round of football. It's very difficult for me to do previews as well plus I want to bring more coverage of other sports to Sport Talk as well.

Anyway, back on topic which is the review of Round 2 of the 2010 AFL Season.

The round kicked off on another Thursday night with the grudge match taking place between Fevola and Carlton. Brisbane continued on from where they left off the last time they played Carlton as they raced to a 22 point half-time lead. Carlton till half-time had kicked an abysmal 3.11. The 3rd quarter was all Carlton as they kicked 7 goals to 2 in the 3rd quarter to lead by 7 at the last change but Brisbane finished off strongly to win by 19. Jonathan Brown was the matchwinner for Brisbane kicking 7 goals while Eddie Betts and Lachlan Henderson kicked 7 goals between them.

Brisbane 16.11.107 defeated Carlton 12.16.88

Saturday afternoon saw a match which everyone tipped to be an embarrassing blowout as Collingwood tangled with Melbourne. The reality is, that this match was a hell of a lot closer than people thought and it took an incident in the last second to decide this match. Melbourne led at the first change and trailed at half and three-quarter time however they fought back and led in the last quarter. Collingwood came again but Melbourne had the ultimate chance to win when the ball was bombed into the goalsquare and Ricky Petterd spilled the mark under great pressure. Collingwood escaped with a 1 point win

Saturday night in Melbourne was a complete and utter embarrassment as St Kilda took North Melbourne to the cleaners. The game was virtually all over at quarter-time with St Kilda leading 8.1 to 0.0. From there the game was a procession and really by the end of it, North Melbourne were very embarrassed. Afterwards North Melbourne's Brent Harvey would describe his 5 possession match as the "worst of his career." Fair to say, he wasn't the only one embarrassed.

St Kilda 22.11.143 defeated North Melbourne 6.3.39

Over the other side of the country, West Coast and Port Adelaide played a game of 3 distinct periods. The first period occured at the start of the game and extended to early in the second quarter when Port Adelaide bounded out to a 27 point lead. The second period went from that point till the end of the 3rd quarter when the Eagles led by 12 points. The 3rd period was the last quarter swing when Port Adelaide booted 6 goals to 3 with Jason Davenport booting 4 of them. Sadly there was a controversial aftermath with Port Adelaide's Jacob Surjan accused of faking the injury that resulted in the stretcher coming out.
West Coast 12.14.86 lost to Port Adelaide 13.11.89

Sunday kicked off with the early start at AAMI Stadium as Adelaide took on Sydney. Adelaide were under fierce pressure following their capitulation against Fremantle and Sydney were confident of breaking their 6 game losing streak against Adelaide. That's what proved to happen as a blistering 7 goal to 2 second quarter allowed the Swans to kick away to a ripping 43 point win over an average Adelaide outfit
Adelaide 11.9.75 lost to Sydney 18.10.118

Being a Fremantle supporter based in Melbourne, it was naturaly that SportTalk was at the Essendon vs Fremantle game at Etihad on Sunday afternoon. It was a game where SportTalk was desperate to see the breaking of a frustrating losing streak however even I was shocked by what transpired. The first half was tight and scrappy and the lead changed a number of times with Essendon leading narrowly at half-time. The 3rd quarter saw Michael Barlow step up with 16 disposals in the quarter and Freo overturn the half-time defecit to record a memorable 44 point win. This came on the day that Matthew Lloyd was honoured by Essendon and saw Freo's first win against Essendon at Etihad, our first win in Melbourne since Round 4 2007 and our first 2-0 start since 1997.
Essendon 9.15.69 lost to Fremantle 17.11.113

Meanwhile over at the MCG, the Western Bulldogs were giving Richmond coach Damien Hardwick a harsh lesson about what it takes to compete with the top teams. The Bulldogs were stinging from their Round 1 loss to Collingwood while Richmond were looking for redemption from their loss to Carlton. Sadly it didn't pan out that way and if it wasn't for inaccurate kicking, Richmond's humiliation would've been greater.
Richmond 7.6.48 lost to Western Bulldogs 17.18.120

Easter Monday saw another Geelong/Hawthorn classic. Hawthorn were the dominant team and in fact, they led for 95% of the game. They led by 4 goals at half-time after an extraordinarily bad Geelong kicking display of 1.7 in the second quarter. They're a classy team though, are Geelong and they eventually wore the Hawks down in an absolute classic. Sadly the ramifications are that Cameron Mooney and Matthew Scarlett (both Geelong) copped suspensions along with Liam Shiels and Michael Osbourne (both Hawthorn)
Hawthorn 13.13.91 lost to Geelong 14.16.100

So ended another extraordinary round and the big story is Fremantle, currently sitting in second spot on the AFL ladder.

Join me next week for a review of the 3rd round of the AFL Season
