AFL Round 20 - Tips, Best Bets, Odds
August 14th 2008 23:41
Welcome back to Sport Talk for Round 20 of the AFL Premiership Season.
Last week's best bet, St Kilda to beat Collingwood, fell in a heap when the Magpies smashed the Saints.
I've vowed to never back, tip, or suggest a wager favouring St Kilda again. This side is unreasonably hot and cold. Imagine the frustration of coaching and supporting such an inconsistent team!
Last Saturday night was the Saints chance to pounce on a fragile Collingwood outfit. Instead, the Pies beat St Kilda to every contest, ran harder and wanted to win. When, if ever, will the Saints shake their status as serial pretenders?
My money is going elsewhere!
Spilt milk aside, let's check out the tips (in bold), odds and best bets for round 20.
3.05 Port Adelaide v Collingwood 1.48
2.24 Essendon v Adelaide 1.79
1.8 Melbourne v West Coast 2.24
2.24 Brisbane v Bulldogs 1.81
5 Sydney v Geelong 1.25
5.6 Richmond v Hawthorn 1.21
2.26 Carlton v Kangaroos 1.78
1.71 Fremantle v St Kilda 2.4
I can't handle picking every away side. With the exception of Melbourne and Fremantle, every other visiting side is favourite to win. This represents great value, as we know an away side clean sweep only happens once a blue moon.
So where is the value?
Essendon, despite last week's Western Australian hiccup, should bounce back against Adelaide. There are no priority picks on the line, and first-year coach Matthew Knights will be desperate to win every match possible.
It's Matthew Lloyd's 250th game and the Bombers will be keen to perform for their captain. On the flip side, Adelaide must win to cement a spot in the top eight.
But Essendon is not Sport Talk's prize selection for the weekend.
The Best Bet of the Week is Fremantle to beat St Kilda at $1.71. The Dockers aren't going great guns, but the Saints are shot. Their performance against Collingwood was insipid, and Fremantle's juicy odds make them a temptation too good to refuse. Back the Dockers with confidence.
A Geelong-Hawthorn multiple will also return something healthy, and both sides are certainties.
Looking elsewhere, something small on Brisbane to beat Western Bulldogs may also be worth your while.
Good luck in tipping and betting this week!

We reckon you'll be an expert of the Olympiad when you come back, so we're going to call you Ray.
For Ray 'Razor' Warren.
Bruce has been quite disappointing I reckon, lack of excitement etc.
Anyway, hope the best bet comes through!
