AFL Round Five - Tips, Odds, Best Bets
April 17th 2008 10:19
Welcome back to Sport Talk. Let's have a look at round five of the AFL season and identify some good value bets for the weekend!
Here are the latest odds and this week's selections are in bold.
1.44 St Kilda v Essendon 3.2
1.25 Geelong v Sydney 4.8
1.43 Adelaide v Fremantle 3.3
2.32 Brisbane v Hawthorn 1.73
1.78 Collingwood v Kangaroos 2.26
3.3 Melbourne v Carlton 1.41
1.46 Bulldogs v Richmond 3.1
2.14 West Coast v Port Adelaide 1.86
On face value, it looks like another weekend for favourites, but as we all learnt in round four, the challenge is to identify the possible upsets.
West Coast to beat Port Adelaide in the west is probably the only better than odds on bet I can recommend. $2.14 for West Coast at home is a dividend we haven't seen for many years.
It would be a staggering stat to find out last time West Coast were paying better than odds on at home...?
The Sport Talk bet of the week is St Kilda to beat Essendon on Friday night at $1.44.
This is easy money. The Bombers came close last week against the Bulldogs, but will be without Lucas, McVeigh, possibly Lloyd and a few other decent fringe players (Jetta, Winderlich).
David Hille is also under a cloud of concern over his shoulder injury.
St Kilda are playing decent football and will easily account for an Essendon side that will fade as the game wears on.
Melbourne are a chance to beat Carlton. The Blues beat the Pies, but are well known for dropping games they should win. After getting the monkey off their back against Collingwood, a lapse against Melbourne could mean defeat. Back the Demons to win by less than 39.5 points - It will be a close one!
Something small on Brisbane to beat Hawthorn at the GABBA at the $2.30 odds is also smart punting. The Lions are travelling well, and the Hawks come off a trip to Launceston.
Teams that have travelled interstate two weeks running don't have good winning records. The Lions are a great value bet back at home after a come from behind win in Adelaide last week.
Good luck, happy tipping and drive safely!
