AFL Trade Week: Every Trade!
October 12th 2007 04:04
Welcome back to Sport Talk, or if you're are first time visitor, a special welcome and we hope you find what your are looking for!
It's been a big week on the AFL trade front, with the so-called 'Toyota Trade Week' going bananas. Also quite fruity is the fact the AFL sold naming rights to the event, or more likely, it was part of Toyota's sponsorship package. Either way, I think it's humorous.
Last year trade week was quiet, but this time around, perhaps inspired by the attention surrounding the Chris Judd to Carlton festival, clubs have gone beserk and embarked on a spring clean out, with big numbers of completed trades.
The full list of trades can be found below, but let's quickly highlight the best and worst trade.
Top deal for both parties, Swans receive some great run and foot skills with Mattner and Adelaide continues its search for young guns. Average age might be a bit concerning for the Swans in three years when a lot of the team will be turned over, but Roos obviously believes the premiership window remains well and truly open.
West Coast (essentially) got shafted by Carlton on this one, on the basis that Judd wanted to leave and therefore the Eagles had no choice but to do the deal on Carlton's terms. I can't believe Carlton managed to pick up Judd and West Coast's round three pick for Kennedy picks 3 and 20. Every club in the league would have signed off on this deal.
Travis Johnstone to Brisbane was a surpise, but closely linked to Johnno's off-field antics. Could either be the start of the end of a good, but not great, career, or the start of a new exciting chapter for Johnstone.
Jordan McMahon to Richmond was a coup for the Tigers and his presence will no doubt be felt in 2008.
All eyes now turn to the AFL pre-season draft, proudly sponsored by NAB (well Toyota got their plug), when the next star, or stars, will be thrust from obscurity into the national sporting spotlight.
