AFL Weekend Wrap
April 17th 2007 01:47
RIVALRY round has cemented itself as a bona fide fan favourite after a weekend of classic clashes and come from behind wins.
Collingwood and Carlton overturned major deficits to defeat Richmond and Essendon, Geelong thumped Melbourne and the Bulldogs were belted by the Saints.
WHO’S HOT
Brendan Fevola - Fev booted eight goals, two in the final quarter, to inspire the Blues to turn the tide on an eight-goal difference against the Bombers at the MCG on Saturday.
Footy fans - Did the AFL reach the magical million in round three? The league had its sights set on a record 1,000,000 fans pushing through the turnstiles by the third weekend of the season. After all the speculation surrounding the ‘hands in the back’ rule, big numbers would mean big smiles on the faces of AFL administrators. But does it justify the rule change?
Tom Hawkins - Opposition beware - the Tomahawk is no one-game wonder. Geelong’s much-hyped wonderboy booted four goals against the hapless Demons at the MCG on Sunday. Hawkins, 18, helped the Cats seal the four points in the first half as the undermanned Melbourne side struggled to offer any resistance. If all goes well for Hawkins, can this kid win a Brownlow?
WHO’S NOT
Melbourne Football Club - 0-3. That’s the win-loss figure that will confront Demon’s coach Neale Daniher this week. From Dee-pleted to Dee-leted, it would take a brave punter to tip Melbourne to play finals football this season. Without David Neitz, Russell Robertson, Jared Rivers and Brock McLean - all sidelined through injury - the Demons were all lettuce and no prawns. We know, we know, it’s only early - but how much bad footy can be attributed to injuries?
Umpires - When Bomber Mark McVeigh pushed the back of Bret Thornton to launch skyward and snaffle a genuine Mark of the Year contender at the ‘G yesterday, a free kick should have been paid. Yes, by the book, a hand in the back - at any stage of the contest - means a free kick. McVeigh hardly inconvenienced Thornton - except for standing on his head - but his hands were clearly thrust into Thornton’s back. So why was no free paid? Is consistency too much to ask for? Or has this rule change gone above and beyond the realms of the game.
