ANZ Championship Preliminary Final
July 6th 2010 08:19
In one of the greatest shocks to occur this season, the NSW Swifts have gone from unbackable favourites to win the title to being knocked out of the finals in straight sets after a 54-49 loss to the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in Newcastle.
It was an astonishing performance from the magic but it didn't look like it was going to happen as the Swifts scooted out to an early lead. Yet again though, there was a significant momentum shift midway through the first quarter and the Magic took full advantage to go into quarter-time leading 12-11.
The second quarter was where the game was lost for the Swifts. They struggled for any sort of fluency, were victims of a 26-9 penalty count and the Magic took full advantage to extend their lead to 29-20 at half-time
Jodi Brown was playing the perfect feed for Van Dyk and this combination continued to cause the Swifts real grief. Despite their best efforts, the lead extended out to 42-32 at the last change
The last quarter was hard and torrid as the Swifts threw everything at the Magic. Irene Van Dyk finally missed a shot but the lead proved to be insurmountable as the Magic held on for a 54-49 win
Irene Van Dyk was the form player on the court for the Magic hitting 44/45 while Catherine Cox, playing with a broken nose and heavy strapping was brave, with a 32/38 performance.
This win was highly historic for the Magic with it being the 2nd win for a New Zealand team in Australia in 3 years of the ANZ Championship and also the first win by a NZ team in the finals in Australia.
The Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic now have history to overcome as they travel to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre to take on the Adelaide Thunderbirds in what shapes up to be a ripper of a game with the battle of the goalshooters likely to decide the game with Adelaide's Carla Borrego taking on Waikato's Irene Van Dyk
Channel 10 and One HD will be showing the Grand Final live on Sunday 11th July from 2:30pm.
Hope you all tune in
