Aussie Millions Poker Tournament - Interview with Gus Hansen
January 23rd 2008 02:31
Gus Hansen is a poker superstar. The 2007 Aussie Millions champion is one of Full Tilt Poker's headline acts and a defining force on tournament tables all over the world.
You won't find Gus talking smack or getting in an opponent's face at the table, he is a graceful champion, quietly spoken and an all round top bloke.
Sport Talk was lucky enough to spend some one-on-one time with Gus Hansen at the 2008 Aussie Millions Poker Tournament at Crown Casino recently.
The interview was conducted by Glen Atwell.
Glen Atwell: Gus Howard, the defending Aussie Millions champion. Are you feeling the pressure this year?
Gus Hansen: No I’m feeling quite relaxed at the moment. My win here last year was great, and I’ll be out there to do it all over again.
GA: What’s the best advice you could give a local player who is starting out in the game and hoping to one day make it big, perhaps even onto the Full Tilt Poker team?
GH: Just play as many hands as you can. Get online and start learning poker, I really believe that playing on the Internet accelerates the learning process like nothing else, it’s the best way to get started and best of all it’s so acceptable these days.
GA: Acceptable? How so?
GH: I mean nowadays if you’re late to work and tell the boss it was because you were up all night playing online poker, he’s more likely to ask where on the Internet you play and start swapping you his username. It’s become acceptable to play poker, even encouraged, and it’s become something that people just ‘do’.
GA: What is the driving force behind the poker industry right now, glamorous, chandelier-laden poker rooms or playing online at home, wearing nothing but socks and jocks?
GH: Socks and what?
GA: Jocks, you know underwear, budgie smugglers?
GH: (confused look) OK… (laughs) I think the Internet is number one at the moment. You can play a full night of poker, and lose every tournament, and only spend a couple of dollars. It removes the high-expense and makes poker so easy to play, which is why player numbers continue to grow, because everyone can play.
GA: Gus ‘The Great Dane’ Hansen, love your nickname and good luck defending your title in the main event.
