Ben Cousins, Drugs, West Coast and the AFL

November 14th 2007 11:29
In the past few weeks, Ben Cousins has been the centre of a drugs and media frenzy.

Yawn.

That's not a bad response. Let's face it, this guy has a major health issue, and should be in full time rehabilitation.

Haven't we heard enough and can't well all move on?

In short, no, because, much to the Western Australian media's delight, Cousins continues to outdo himself and sprial further and further downhill.

Despite the police officially dropping both charges against Cousins, one for possessing an illegal substance, and two, for failing to complete a police test, the former West Coast Eagle can't stay out of trouble.

Jetting to USA to check in to drug rehab, Cousins ended up in hospital for two days, after his female companion made a 911 call, stating Cousins was on cocaine and experiencing a bad reaction.

Yawn.

Can't this guy get it right?

Australia is a country of fair-gos and she'll be right mates, but Ben Cousins has forced the community, and the AFL, to draw a line in the sand (and not snort it).

The AFL needs to step in. It has already charged Cousins with bringing the game into disrepute. It now needs to ensure the Brownlow Medallist does not play football again. At national, or local level.

How many chances can one person have? Who is taking responsibility for his actions? Cousins doesn't appear to know right from wrong at the moment, and seemingly has one devil and one angel in his left and right ear.

Drug addictions are a serious health issue, and sometimes involve physical dependancy, but to treat a problem, it first needs to be recognised, allowed to be assessed, then willingly treated.

Cousins will never get better, let alone play AFL ever again, if he refuses to knuckle down, take a good hard look, and get some help.

Not fly to USA for a four day coke binge, followed by two trivial days of rehab.

Cousins needs to be banned from the AFL, to quash any hopes he may harbour, and get his life in order.

I get angry every time I hear a celeb is doing drugs withouts being charged by the police. What is this? I though we live in a democratic society and we all have the same rights. Actually police is not the solution for drug problems, there are drug rehabs for that, they are far more educational without the risk of creating more dangerous delinquents... Cousins should fit in one of these.

great comment. but do rehab places actually drum into users that what they are doing is not only bad for their health, but is illegal in every sense of the word?
