Top seeds advance at Australian Indoor

Reigning champions Kelvin Kerkow and Judy Nardella showed glimpses of their best on the first day of the Australian Indoor Championships at Tweed Heads Bowls Club today (20/8).

Gold Coast-based Kerkow enjoyed a straight sets victory against Victorian Torie Babitsch (8-3, 15-2) and Nardella recorded an 8-6, 9-9 win over Maggie Johnston to progress to the second round and assert themselves as genuine contenders in a top-notch field.

Kerkow was pleased with his performance, made even more impressive considering he had been battling the flu in the lead up to the event.

“I’ve spent the last week in bed, but the lure of winning back-to-back titles got me through today, and will hopefully get me through tomorrow,” he said.

Kerkow plays Alan Law in the second round and should he win, would play the winner of the clash between Australian Bowls Squad duo Aron Sherriff and Shane Globits.

“That’s potentially going to be a very tough match, those two are both potential winners of this event,” he said.

“But I still have my sights set on winning two in a row.”

Sherriff, the hero of Australia’s World Team Cup victory in May, progressed to the second round after beating Gavin Niclasen (10-7, 8-4) to set up the mouth-watering second round clash against Globits.

Globits survived a first round scare against Queenslander Jamie Anderson.

After winning the first set 14-0, Anderson charged back into the match, winning the second set 12-0. But it was Globits who held his nerve in the tiebreak, winning 4-0 and progressing to the round of 16.

Not so lucky was third seed and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Mark Casey who was defeated by young ACT qualifier Ricky Lindbeck 12-7, 1-9, 4-0.

Women’s third seed Karen Murphy had no trouble accounting for her opponent Madonna Kropp in straight sets 15-0, 8-4.

Fourth seed Kelsey Cottrell also won through to the second round and will play Veronica Elliott, who defeated 12-year-old young gun Breeanna Dickson.
