Chelsea - A club in crisis
March 22nd 2010 00:19
Chelsea FC have been a powerhouse soccer club in England over the past few years. They may not have always achieved success but they were known for fashionable football. Sadly, the past couple of weeks have been a horror for them and it looks like there's a serious crisis brewing.
Obviously it all kicked off with the John Terry/Wayne Bridge scandal and at the time, there appeared to be no effect because Terry still played better than ever although there was a lot of sympathy for Wayne Bridge, even from within the Chelsea dressing room. Ashley Cole was the next player to fall victim to the tabloids as his affairs from pre-season tours and the like were exposed and he was threatened with the sack.
Since those 2 scandals occured, it's been one problem after another for this club. John Terry's form has dipped and it looks like dressing room unrest is threatening to destory the team spirit fostered under Jose Mourinho.
Speaking of Mourinho. His Inter team caused the biggest shock and knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League after winning 3-1 on aggregate (2-1 at home and 1-0 away) and there was no doubt that he was the story. Chelsea looked stale and bereft of ideas against Inter and Didier Drogba continued to accumulate his Champions League "Hall of Shame" as he was sent off for the 3rd time in 3 editions (2007-08 vs Man United for a slap, 2008-09 vs Barcelona, he decided to tirade the referee in the cameras in front of a worldwide audience and 2009-10 vs Chelsea for a stomp on Thiago Motta). Mourinho was the story until John Terry decided to take the headlines again. First, he had a go at the 4th official following the game and then he hit a steward with his car in the players car park.
The next day, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich entered into the drama. He summoned Chelsea players to Stamford Bridge and asked if they were good players or well-paid players? It got even more stranger as it has now emerged that Abramovich is threatening to sack manager Carlo Ancelotti if he doesn't deliver the EPL title.
Speaking of Ancelotti, he is the man I feel most sorry for here. He's come into a club with an owner who has ridiculous expectations of his team not to mention players that frankly, have too much ego and an inability to stay out of the paper. A well respected manager like this doesn't deserve this sort of shite. Having said that, if Ancelotti gets sacked, he'd be joining the likes of
Claudio Ranieri (went to Valencia, then italy with Parma, Juventus and now at Roma)
Jose Mourinho (went to Inter Milan and won 2 Serie A so far)
Avram Grant (went to Portsmouth and they're gonna get relegated due to going into administration)
Luis Felipe Scolari (went to Bunyodkor in Uzbekistan and took them to Asian Champions League)
Guus Hiddink (managed Russia, couldn't get them to World Cup and now heading to Turkey)
It's a pretty impressive list but in all honesty, it's not something Ancelotti deserves.
As for Abramovich, well, is he the right owner for the club? He's put a lot of money in and the returns have been impressive but the constant chopping and changing of managers not to mention the snarling nature of the Chelsea side, cannot be impressive. If there's one thing Chelsea have lacked it's humility.
Seriously, there needs to be some people taking a good hard look at themselves concerning their behaviour and it looks like there could be further trouble to come.
Following comments made, John Terry could now face a UEFA Champions League ban and Chelsea threw away a lead to draw against Blackburn and they now slip to 3rd in the league though still with a game in hand.
It hasn't been a good 2 months at Chelsea
