Chris Judd to Carlton
October 4th 2007 11:18
Chris Judd has finally made the move back to his homeland Victoria.
His club of choice, or preferance perhaps, is Carlton.
Am I the only one thinking 'what the...?'
Essendon, Collingwood and Carlton were his three picks, and from my perspective, Juddy eliminated the two most successful and strategically positioned clubs in the league.
Sure Essendon have a terrible list at the moment, but they also bob up for a premiership, 1984, 1985, 1993, 2000. It's a cycle of success.
Collingwood have a hardcore following, won a flag in 1990 and have come close against the unstoppable Brisbane Lions earlier this decade.
So why did Judd choose Carlton?
Money? Somehow I don't think the best footballer in the league would be motivated by cash.
$5million or $4million over five or six years? The point I'm trying to make is that money, in those vast amounts, doesn't figure in the final decision. It's not like it's the difference between three of four bedrooms is it?
Judd has chosen Carlton because of Richard Pratt and the young, burgeoning list that will threaten the competition leaders in the next year or so. Murphy, Gibbs and the next star Carlton recruits will shape up quickly as a force to be reckoned with.
But will it breed success, like the Collingwood and the Essendon's tend to do?
Only time will. But one thing is for sure, it's good to have Judd back in Victorian heartland!

time has already told.
Carlton: 16 premierships.
As many as Essendon.
More than Collingwood.
Whether he winds up there or not, something else.

I see your point, but I think Carlton have been challenged, from a fundamental and structural point of view, since the salary cap problems.
Pratt is a massive asset for the club, and the young list will make the top eight, perhaps in 2008 or certainly in 2009.
Judd wants premierships, so Carlton fans should rejoice in his decision - it means more cups are on the way!

With Carlton taking its current position with West Coast in relation to the trade deal, I can not see how Carlton can secure him. They have until Tuesday to close the deal.
If the deal is not secured then Richmond will have first shot at him with the #2 pick as Carlton will use the #1 pick to secure Kreuzer.
Richmond should not jump in bed with Carlton on the issue and should secure him for themselves.
Atleast st this stage West Coast can still negotiate with the Tigers to get some sort of compensation for the #1 player in the AFL.
Judd to the Tigers anyone want to give me odds?

As someone said, the pressure is now on Carlton to close the deal. They have said they won't trade pick number one.
If you were West Coast, would you accept anything less than the first pick for the league's top player?

Judd deliberately allowed the media into his negotiations to try and add credence, or boldness, to his choice.
At the end of the day, straight up, where he wants to go means nothing. West Coast want to get value out of the deal, that's a given, but Carlton (especially) won't handicap themselves by losing the first draft pick for Judd.
Richmond won't come to the party and help out Carlton or West Coast.
The Eagles just have to bite the bullet, clean up their drug-ridden club and prevent stars from wanting to depart in the first place.
West Coast to finish outside the eight next season - you read it first at Sport Talk!

Nice blog mate.
I think the main reason Juddy chose the Blues is because of the culture at the club.
Success would have came about alot quicker with the Pies, but recent history of trouble-making would have steered him to Carlton.
Now, with Judd the Blues list looks alot more attractive and finals will more than likely come about next season.
I welcome the greatest player of the modern game to the more than capable hands of the Carlton Football Club.
Peace out.

The tradition continues with Carlton buying the best players and having another President who is a crook.
Perhaps we need to wait and see what the peanlties are for the club and the President this time!

I probably should be impartial, and I don't barrack for Carlton.
But stuff it, I hope Judd signs with Carlton, I hope Pratt continues to rort the cardboard industry and I hope Victorian clubs win the next 20 flags in a row!
How's that for size?

In the midst of hard times, people often forget the good times, and just how much success a club has had (this principle can also be applied to life in general).
I am certain that money was some motivation for Judd to side with the Blues, and money is something Carlton is not short of now with Pratt on board (minus the big fine he is facing).
But he will fit in and would have been attracted to playing with a bunch of young stars, and some crazy ones (Fev and Satanta) in the years to come.
