Chris Osgood Retires
July 19th 2011 18:27
The goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings, Chris Osgood, announced his retirement on Tuesday. He played in 17 seasons in the NHL, won 401 games and three Stanley Cups. Osgood had expressed interest in playing another season, but his heath is a concern. He said that he will stay with the Red Wings as a goalie consultant. Osgood finished his career by being fourth all-time with 15 postseason shutouts, eighth all-time with 74 playoff wins, and tenth all-time with 401 regular season wins. He played 744 games with the Red Wings, New York Islanders, and St. Louis Blues. Osgood was the backup goalie to Jimmy Howard last season. The Red Wings re-signed Joey MacDonald to be the team's number three goaltender. Detroit is now looking for a number two goaltender behind Howard. Osgood was the starting goaltender in 1998 and 2008 when the Red Wings won the Stanley Cups. In 1997, the Red Wings won the title with Osgood as the backup.
