Sport Talk - by Scott 5

Clive Palmer vs the FFA

February 10th 2010 13:28
Sport Talk has recently become increasingly angered and bitter towards the owner of Gold Coast United, Clive Palmer.

Palmer is a Liberal Party member who also runs a multi-billion dollar company dealing with coal and iron ore etc. Sadly it seems that a combination of being the richest man in Queensland, not to mention owning Gold Coast United, has given him a license to cause controversy.

He kicked it off before the opening round of the A-League season with his comments that he was going to boycott the opening game in protest at not opening their debut season at home along with fixturing. He would subsequently back down from this comment but this was the beginning of signs that he would be willing to talk about anything which could potentially upset the FFA.

Then he followed up by criticising the judicial process afer Steve Pantelidis was hauled before the Match Review Panel for violent conduct. Amazingly Clive Palmer was forced to back down from his strong views, how, no-one really knows.

Following that, we had the story of Clive Palmer thumbing his nose at referees by awarding his team a "win" bonus following a 3-2 loss against Melbourne. There was a decision to award Melbourne a penalty and it had to be taken twice following encroachment and Palmer still awarded the team a win bonus. Amazing he carried on saying that he'd give the referee a red card for his performance

It got even better as Gold Coast United threatened to implode in October/November following Clive Palmer's controversial decision to introduce a crowd cap at Skilled Park. While the cap was designed to save $100,000 a game, it wasn't popular with the fans and everyone saw the opportunity to pour scorn on Palmer and his mob, who were rapidly losing sympathy with a frustrated public. Again, he was forced to back down after the FFA pledged to take over the marketing of Gold Coast's games for the remainder of the season.

Now though, Clive Palmer has gone too far and something has to be done. Following Gold Coast's 1-0 loss and subsequent comments, he has been hit with a please explain after claiming that the FFA were pursuing an anti-Gold Coast agenda. This was in response to having the Gold Coast salary cap audited along with the citing of Miron Bleiberg for ridiculous comments made in light of Pantelidis' 5 match ban.

Now really, enough is enough. We are getting increasingly sick and tired of the obnoxious whinging and crap coming out of Gold Coast United. Is it any wonder that people call them "Scum Coast United" or "Hypocrite Coast United?" Clive Palmer's ramblings have seemingly rubbed off on people with Miron Bleiberg (coach) making ridiculous comments and Jason Culina being exposed as an absolute hypocrite.

Seriously, I think it's time the Gold Coast put up or shut up. Make your claims privately in a meeting with the FFA and don't make them public, therefore contributing to damaging the product.

To be quite frank I wish they'd shut up but with Clive Palmer and Miron Bleiberg there, that sadly is never going to occur.

I look forward to paying out the Gold Coast for more ridiculous comments in the months to come.
