One-off a Royal Flush... A crushing defeat
A PERSONAL story of guts, determination and tragedy to lighten up your afternoon.
I was playing Caribbean Stud Poker at Crown Casino in Melbourne early this week and a $10 wager almost transformed my life forever.
I know it is a game of 'one off' but this was something else.
10d, Jd, Qd, Kd were the first four cards I saw in my hand.
"Wow - I'm one off a Royal Flush here" - I announced to the table.
The progressive jackpot was flashing past at $400,000, a tidy prize in anyone's language (let alone a poverty-stricken blogger/journalist).
I carefully peeled back the fifth card in my hand... and saw white emptiness...
"It's a red Ace!" - I exclaimed... But what suit?
Obviously it was a blasted HEART... otherwise Sport Talk would be streaming live from somewhere in the Galapagos Islands.
Apparently only one or two Royal Flushes are dealt a year, and only one or two people get as close as I did.
Sigh... Now it's back to work.
