Dandenong snare dream coaching duo
February 10th 2010 12:18
This story comes courtesy from the WNBL (Women's National Basketball League) in Australia.
My local team, the Dandenong Rangers have moved very quickly to sort out their coaching team for 2010-11 after the decision of incumbent Dean Kinsmann not to seek reappointment for the coaching job (why, no-one knows).
Anyway it was announced that the Rangers had snared Mark Wright as a coach and Cheryl Chambers as an assistant.
To someone who knows a bit about the WNBL, this was like music to my ears.
For a little bit of a history lesson, I dived onto the WNBL Website and other sources
Mark Wright was actually a coach at Dandenong from 1998/99 to 2001/02. During that time he compiled a 47-37 record and took Dandenong to a Preliminary Final (2000/01) and Semi Final (2001/02).
He then moved on to coaching in the NBL and it's fair to say, he didn't really achve a lot and in fact, he was pretty crappy (coaching at the Victoria Giants). Still after many years, he's finally returned "home" to Dandenong.
As for Cheryl Chambers, she has coached in the WNBL for many years and stood down as Bulleen Boomers coach at the end of last season ftre coaching for some 6-7 seasons. She was Coach of the Year twice in 2004/05 and 2008/09 and since stepping down, she went to coach Kilsyth in the SEABL.
So what are my thoughts on this duo?
I think it's a bloody dream come true to have 2 highly esteemed coaches in charge of Dandenong. Ever since winning 2 titles in a row under Gary Fox, we have slipped back and declined horribly. These 2 have a track record of achieving success and really, having names like Wright and Chambers, could really ensure that Dandenong start recruiting some big names and ironing out the flaws in our game which could see us back on top in no time.
This is a magnificent decison by Dandenong basketball and Isure as hell will be hoping that this coaching duo leads us back to respectibility and back to the top ASAP.
Also though, I would like to congratulate Dean Kinsmann on the work he's done this season since he took over from Dale Waters. We've been competitive a lot of the time but he still hasn't found the answer to the "one cold quarter curse" that affects us. He'll coach his last game this Saturday night at 7:30 at Dandenong Basketball Stadium against Adelaide and Sport Talk will be there (fingers crossed) to see the end of the season.
Either way, the future is looking a lot brighter for Dandenong
