THE Dandenong Thunder’s winless hoodoo at George Andrews Reserve continued when arch rival St Albans Saints beat the FFV State League One side on Saturday night.
A last-gasp 89th minute goal to Saints substitute Steven Jovanovski guaranteed victory for his side on a night when the Thunder failed to convert any of its opportunities into scoring chances.
In the last play of the night, St Albans worked the ball down the left wing and whipped a good ball into the far post.
Jovanovski, who had just been substituted into the game, was in the right place at the right time to head the ball into the back of the net.
But it was a story of missed chances for the Thunder, as Dandenong had 17 shots on target denied by the St Albans goalkeeper. On the other hand, St Albans troubled the Thunder goalkeeper only four times, but managed to sneak the last attempt over the line.
Thunder coach Toby Patterson said the team could not win if it did not score goals.
“It’s an old saying, but we had so many chances to win the game and it was the last kick of the day that cost us,” he said.
“But we’re getting there.
“There are a couple of players to come into the side and I’m looking forward to getting a win for the home crowd.”
Dandenong has slumped to ninth position on the ladder and is yet to win a game under lights on its home pitch.
The Thunder clashes with Bentleigh Greens at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex at 3pm on Sunday.
