France Beats Nigeria In World Cup Opener
June 26th 2011 17:38
In its World Cup opener, France beat Nigeria, 1-0, in front of more than 25,000 people in Germany. The only goal that was scored came from Marie-Laure Delie, which came at the 56th minute mark in the Rhein-Neckar Arena. That goal came off one of her teammates error, Louisa Necib, who missed her shot when Eugenie Le Sommer crossed from right. Off of Necib's missed opportunity, Delie took the ball in the center and shot it in for a goal. Though out the game, France pressure forced Nigeria to rely on counterattack, but they lacked skills and speed to execute. France went undefeated in qualifying, while Nigeria is the perennial African champion and reached all five women's World Cups. Now, France has three points in its group play. Delie said, “We are not used to play in circumstances like this. It is a real pleasure.” She was referring to the noise that came from the Nigerian brass band that provided relentless rhythm in Sinsheim. In the other Group A game, Germany is playing Canada at Berlin's Olympic Stadium, which is the official opener to the 16-team tournament. Germany is the two time defending champion in the World Cup; trying to become the first team/nation to win three World Cup championships.
