St Kilda sacks Grant Thomas...
September 12th 2006 05:56
The St Kilda Football Club has sacked coach Grant Thomas today.
Saints' President Rod Butters announced the news at a press conference this afternoon.
The move to replace Grant comes less than a week after the Saints bowed out of the 2006 AFL finals series, defeated by Melbourne last Friday night.
It was widely believed that, despite having a horrendous run with injury, Thomas had underperformed with the available list at Moorabbin.
The club had previously thrown full support behind Thomas, but it seems that the St Kilda board has tired of waiting for the embattled coach to deliver.
In a bizarre press conference, Butters first spoke about 'Grant's resignation', then only minutes later, Grant said it was more a 'mutual agreement' then a resignation.
Grant then said he felt as though he was still the right man for the job and wanted to continue coaching.
Grant was pushed; he did not jump.
Thomas coached St Kilda to consecutive preliminary finals in 2004 and 2005, plus a Wizard Cup Premiership in 2004.

Had the 'siren gate' affair not cost them that game in Tassie, they would have finished in top four and Grant would still have his job (it is not possible they would be eliminated already).
I think Grant and Butters had a falling out and that cost him his job.
