Hawthorn back 'Buddy' Lance Franklin over Melbourne nightclub incident

June 4th 2008 00:32
The Hawthorn Football Club issued the following statement in relation to Lance 'Buddy' Franklin's antics at CQ nightclub last Saturday night.

Wonder why the Hawks deliberately drew attention to the video from 2006, are the expecting it to surface soon?

---

Hawthorn Football Club issues the following statement in light of the continuing speculation regarding events surrounding the removal of Hawthorn player Lance Franklin from CQ nightclub in the city last Saturday night.

There is significant confusion as to the events that took place prior to Franklin being escorted off the premises. Franklin along with a number of his teammates arrived at the nightspot and in the ensuing period was asked to pose for a number of photographs with both male and female patrons.

Unsubstantiated allegations have been raised by two female patrons claiming Franklin, after having spoken to them inappropriately, threw the contents of his drink over them and their friends.

Hawthorn Chief Executive Ian Robson, having spoken with Franklin, the other players in attendance, and members of the public who have contacted the Club, is confident of Franklin’s version of events.

“After becoming aware of these additional allegations overnight I have spoken at length with Lance, and a number of the other Hawthorn players and impartial witnesses who were in attendance on the night,” said Robson.

“I am satisfied that there is no substance to the allegation relating to the throwing of a drink over patrons at the club and as to the allegation of the language that may have been used, Lance is unable to specifically recall what was said, however, denies it was of a sexual nature,” concluded Robson.

In the absence of further information being brought forward the Club now sees the matter as closed.

The Club is also aware of the posting today on a media website of an unrelated video purportedly involving Hawthorn players in 2006.

Whilst the incident occurred some time ago the Club will investigate this separately and should it be determined the players whose likeness it appears to be, the Club will counsel them as to appropriate social behavior.
