Idea: EFL vs WRFL in battle of the worst
July 9th 2010 08:21
Well I'm going to depart from my normal postings and today bring you a story with a bit of a difference. This story comes from the world of local footy (Australian Rules Football) and is something that's been on my mind for the past few weeks.
For those who don't know, Sporttalk takes a keen interest in the football at grass-roots level. Having been going to Scoresby (Eastern Football League) games for a couple of years now and the past 2 EFL Division 1 Grand Finals, I've quickly come to the realisation that local football can be just as exciting, if not more exciting than the AFL.
So anyway, what is all this about?
Pretty plain and simple. I have had this idea in my head for a number of weeks that the worst team in the EFL should play the worst team in the WRFL in a charity type event.
This idea came about when I consulted the ladders in both the EFL and WRFL.
In the EFL, there's a club called Surrey Park who're sitting in Division 4 on the bottom of the ladder with no wins and an average losing margin of 152.8 points. Surrey Park have been consistent failures ever since switching from the Southern Football League to the Eastern in 2002 and are on track for yet another winless season.
Meanwhile over in the WRFL, there's a club called Nth Sunshine who are sitting on the bottom of the ladder in Division 2 with no wins and an average losing margin of 236.08 points. They've taken struggle street to a whole new low this year and that makes them perfect candidates for this game.
Nth Sunshine may be in Division 2 in the WRFL and Surrey Park may be in Division 4 of the EFL but Nth Sunshine's horrendous losing margin I believe levels the playing field framatically.
So how would this day work?
What I am visualising is a day which could be used to boost whatever charity we wanted in terms of raffles and crowd-involving activities.
It would be played at a neutral venue on a Saturday afternoon and there would be media there to take photos and film this great day.
I believe that ticket prices should be set as follows
Adults - $5
Children - $2
Each ticket would have a code on it and this code would help determine participants in half-time activities
At half-time of the game there would be a series of activities running.
Auskick game - Kids
Goal-kicking competition - People drawn out according to code on ticket
Handball competition - Kids not playing Auskick
Tug of War - Participants from both clubs competing to win $500 for their club
First into the Bin - People drawn out according to code on ticket where there are 4 bins lined up joined together and the first person to get the ball into the bin would win $100
There would also be a raffle for a random prize.
At the end of the game, both teams would receive half a trophy each as a commemoration and all money raised from canteen sales, sponsorship, ticket sales and raffle tickets would go to charity.
What better way than bringing together the worst team from the east and the worst team from the west to raise money for charity while finding out which one of them is least dreadful.
Let's see if such a concept would ever eventuate
