Japan Wins World Cup

July 17th 2011 22:19

Japan is the World Cup Champion. It came behind twice to tie the score at 2, and won the shootout, 3-1, to take the Cup. For the U.S., Shannon Boxx, Carli Lloyd, and Tobin Heath, all missed penalty kicks. U.S. blew a l-0 lead with six minutes left in regulation from winning its third World Cup title. Japan became the first Asian nation to win the World Cup, doing it for its first win against U.S in 26 tries. U.S. has taken it a 2-1 lead with Abby Wambach's header in the 104th minute. Alex Morgon scored the first goal for the Americans with a blocked cross and sent it to Wambach, who was in front of the goal on the 6 yard line. Sawa kicked in a corner kick in the 117th minute to tie the game at 2. The Americans had a chance to take a 3-2 lead when Morgan was floored by Azusa Iwashimizu just outside the area in the 121st minute. Lloyd, Boxx, and Heather O'Reilly huddled behind the ball before O'Reilly tipped it to Lloyd. Lloyd's shot was wide, and Heath couldn't make anything happen with the rebound. The U.S. had beaten Brazil in the quarterfinals on penalty kicks that was one of the most exciting and electrifying games in the World Cup, men's or women's.
