Jose Mourinho at war in Italy

February 23rd 2010 07:13
Sport Talk has recently had a field day reading all about Inter Milan coach, Jose Mourinho and people constantly attacking him for comments he made or rumours about his future, etc. You can't deny that he's extremely provocative and and does spark a lot of debate and controversy. Who could ever forget his famous celebration down the touchline at Old Trafford after Porto equalised in the 89th minute? Who could forget his time in England where he made enemies of a lot of people but also how his time ended at Chelsea? He's a bastard, but a bloody entertaining one.

Unfortunately Mourinho has recently lost the plot in Italy. Linked to a never-ending number of clubs (including Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid etc) the pressure is starting to get to Mourinho as he's locked horns recently with a good many people.

Take the match against Napoli. Mourinho conceded that Napoli deserved a point but Inter should've had a penalty saying that "(Referee) Rosetti's attitude was very good throughout the game, if we put aside this small, big episode." Talk about a walking contridiction. What the hell is a small, big problem anyway? It got better when he lashed out at Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis saying that "Perhaps we paid the penalty today because of that little man who is always talking on TV." Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri responded by saying that "If you compare the players we've each got at our disposal, my results are better. He talks a lot but as for the rest, with the team that Inter have they would win even without a coach" lashing out at Mourinho

Then we add Roma to the list with Claudio Ranieri lashing out at Mourinho saying that "I understand Mourinho because he's never found himself in this situation. It's too easy going from (billionaire Chelsea owner Roman) Abramovich to (millionaire Inter president Massimo) Moratti," This was in response to Mourinho claiming that "Roma are a cunning club by always claiming that they have no money so they get cheaper transfer deals."

Unfortunately Mourinho has gone way too far and this time, the Italian authorities have caught up with him., giving him a 3 match ban effective immediately. During the match against Sampdoria, Mourinho made a handcuff gesture, laughed at the officials decisions, alledgedly confronted the officials during the interval and acted up with dramatic behaviour. Adding to that, 4 Inter players got suspended (2 for being sent off, 1 for abusive language and another for trying to punch a Sampdoria player) and it's clear that Inter Milan are fast becoming the club that everyone loves to hate and at the centre of it all, Mourinho.

Inter President, Massimo Morratti is said to be absolutely fuming at the behaviour of Mourinho and spent the better part of Monday, apologising to everyone at the Italian League headquarters. Unfortunately that may not be enough to ward off the threat of a referee strike in Serie A as a protest against Mourinho's behaviour (see later in article). This is in my mine the most worrisome thing for Italy who've only just recovered from the 2006 match-fixing scandal (where the big clubs were choosing the referees).

Jose Mourinho for mine is already a true great, having already won league titles in Portugal, England and Italy and also a Champions League and UEFA Cup. He is, however spoiling his reputation with disgraceful behaviour and outspoken comments. I think he needs to get out of Italy and fast or else, the whole Serie A will be at war with him and that can't be good for the game.
