World champion defencejobs Opal Lauren Jackson scored a league record and career high 56 points in the Women’s Korean Basketball League (WKBL) yesterday.
The 6 foot 5 Australian Captain also pulled in an intimidating 17 rebounds in Samsung Bichumi’s 96-76 victory over the Kumho Redwings.
The previous WKBL scoring record for a single game was 50, set by former Kumho import forward Sheri Sam of the United States in February 2002.
Jackson’s previous career scoring high in any league was a 48 point performance for the Canberra Capitals against Perth in Australia’s Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) in October 2003.
Less than a fortnight ago she posted 47 points in her South Korean team’s victory over the Shinsegae Coolcats, surpassing her previous WKBL high-scores of 40 and 39 points.
In February she was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the WKBL All-Star Game.
After 17 games for Samsung Bichumi, Jackson is averaging a Gaze-like 31.1 points per game to go along with 13.5 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.6 assists per game.
In related news, the Phoenix Mercury has re-signed World Championship MVP Penny Taylor in America’s Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).
"She's the MVP of the world championships, a vital piece of our plan here, and we had to have her back," general manager Ann Meyers Drysdale told The Associated Press.
Taylor averaged a career-high 13.9 points and 5.7 rebounds in 20 WNBA games last season.
