Stars set for Indoor showdown

Action at the Australian Indoor Championships kicks into overdrive today (21/8), with a number of mouth-watering clashes certain to keep spectators glued to their seats at Tweed Heads Bowls Club.
But fans had better be on their seats early, with the match of the day, Aron Sherriff (NSW) v Shane Globits (QLD) rolling into action at 8am.
Sherriff, the eighth seed, won through in style yesterday against Gavin Niclasen (10-7, 8-4), but Globits, seeded ninth at the indoor championships, also impressed when the pressure was on, winning a tiebreak against Jamie Anderson.
Last year’s champion Kelvin Kerkow also returns to the carpet at 8am, to take on fellow Queenslander Alan Law in the round of 16.
The winner of the match is set to play the winner of Sherriff and Globits, two players that Kerkow described as potential winners of the $6000 event.
In the women’s draw, all eyes will be on the 10am clash between fellow Australian Bowls Squad members Ceri Ann Davies and Maria Rigby.
Seeded ninth and eighth respectively at the Australian Indoor Championships, Davies and Rigby look to be in dangerous form and both are eyeing a place in the quarter final round later this afternoon, where the winner will do battle with either Judy Nardella or Rebecca Quail.
Nardella, last year’s winner and top seed, was in scintillating form against Maggie Johnston and has her hopes set on another finals berth this time around.
At midday, Anthony Kiepe and Wayne Turley, both members of the Australian Bowls Squad, will square off in what looks set to be a tightly contested game.
Kiepe is seeded seventh at the indoor event and Turley, a 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, is seeded at 10.
