Lawn Bowls Match Fixing Scandal
January 14th 2010 03:52
Lawn Bows is a sport that you normally wouldn't associate with corruption or match-fixing or anything like that. It's a game that has a reputation of being an old-persons pursuit but it is also renowned (especially at the top level) for being very competitive.
Right now though, it is dealing with the most unusual incident ever.
The New Zealand men's four (called the Black Jacks) were accused of match-fixing in a match against Thailand at the Asia-Pacific Championships last year.
Apparantly they were leading by a few ends but then they faltered badly to lose 17-15 in a shock result.
When you hear of match-fixing, you hear of players being payed to under-perform but who would want to try to fix a bowls game?
As it turns out, the New Zealand men's four team were the ones that fixed the game, but not for money. They fixed it so that they could get a favourable draw in the next round of the Championships and keep Canada out of the playoffs.
Naturally there was an investigation concerning this and some harsh criticisms made.
It seems that the players involved aren't a fan of New Zealand Lawn Bowls and their coach saying the following:
On the coach:
On prize money:
The investigation has since found the players guilty of match-fixing and they will find out their punishment at the end of the month.
Now I just gotta say that this is the most extraordinary thing I've ever heard of. To hear of match-fixing in lawn bowls is bizarre enough. To find out that out of $1.3M, they only get $10K I think is an absolute disgrace.
You would think that New Zealand Lawn Bowls would be supporting their players but as they're the ones conducting the investigation, there's been no support forthcoming.
Either way, this is a very sad day for Lawn Bowls everywhere.

On the coach:
To be fair, he should be charged with impersonating being a coach
(1)On prize money:
I mean, we won the world championships. We're the number one country in the world. And they get $1.3 million and the players get $10,000 of that. I don't care if I don't play again
