Lester On DL
July 7th 2011 01:14
Jon Lester, the Boston Red Sox pitcher, was taken out of a no-no in the fourth inning on Tuesday night, because he suffered a lower lat muscle strain on Wednesday. The Red Sox have now called up Scott Atchison from Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox made the move to put Lester on the disabled list prior to the results of the MRI. Depending on how severe the strain is, he could miss up to two to four weeks. Boston Red Sox manager, Terry Francona, said he was confident that Lester has a strain but wanted to be sure with the testing. Before the injury, Francona was contemplating of sitting Lester's next scheduled start on Sunday before the All-Star break. Francona is not going to him until July 19 at Baltimore. He will not be eligible until July 22. Francona said that Lester did not put up much of fight when Jon heard that he would be placed on the DL. Lester was aggravated about the situation, because he never wants to miss a start. Lester has been one of two consistent starters for the Red Sox, going 10-4 with a 3.31 ERA. Also, Clay Buchholz was examined by a back specialist this morning in North Carolina and has returned to Boston, but the Red Sox have not received the results of the tests performed by Dr. Craig Brigham. Francona did not disclose any plans for the rotation going forward. He said such talk is “premature.” With the addition of Lester and Buchholz on the DL, Dice-K is gone for the season due to Tommy John surgery and the Red Sox has gotten inconsistent play from John Lackey, who has a 7.47 ERA and has spent time on the DL due to elbow issues.
