A few weeks ago I was sitting on the computer when I suddenly had the urge to take a break from looking at the screen. I got off the computer and walked into the loungeroom and was then distracted by the most extraordinary sight possible. It was women wearing shoulder pads and lingerie. Quickly was I to discover we were watching the Lingerie Football League.
Naturally being a male, I settled in for a bit of a squiz at this sight of women playing NFL Football in lingerie and I gotta say, I was very bloody impressed. The standard was actually quite high and I enjoyed it.
There are 10 teams in the Lingerie Football League. They are:
- Miami Caliente
- Chicago Bliss
- San Diego Seduction
- Seattle Mist
- Los Angeles Temptation
- Denver Dream
- Dallas Desire
- Philadelphia Passion
- New York Majesty
- Tampa Breeze
In terms of the rules, they're relatively straight-forward. Besides the kickoffs at the start of each half, there is no punting at all.
- When a touchdown is scored, you can do one of the following:
- One point conversion attempt from the 2 yd line
- Two point conversion attempt from the 5yd line
- After the conversion attempt, the defence get the ball at their own 15yd line and have to try and get it to the other end of the field.
- There are 7 players per team on the field at any one time
So back to the match I was watching. It was the Miami Caliente @ Chicago Bliss. I've never felt so enthralled in my life by all of this and clearly the player of the match was a girl from the Bliss nicknamed "The Tank." It was 29-19 in favour of the Bliss and it was a high standard game and it fair dinkum looked like there was a chance of a brawl every play because of the physicality of the game. The highlight of the night had to be when a touchdown was scored and one girl tried to "ride" another girl, so to speak.
As for the commentary, well it was unbelievable to listen to. They were commentating as if it was NFL but at the same time realising they had to tread a fine line with their comments as it could leave them open to sexual innuendo or discrimination etc. They did a bloody marvellous job and I gotta say that it was genuinely funny to listen to.
The only criticism of the Lingerie Football League that I have really resides around the format. They have a 10 team competition and yet they only play 4 games before the top 2 in each conference play off for the right to play at the Lingerie Bowl on Sunday February 7th. If they want to make it more credible, they need each team playing each other once (9 games and then finals).
Besides that, this is a game that is going to attract a lot of attention.
