Lleyton Hewitt has been forced to withdraw from the Sony Ericsson Open following a re-occurrence of a hamstring injury suffered during the Indian Wells tournament.
Hewitt was set to play Raemon Sluiter in the second round, yet withdrew from the competition leaving lucky loser Robert Kendrick to defeat the Dutchman 6-2 6-4.
American James Blake has crashed out in the second round after losing in three sets to France's Floren Serra, while fellow seeds Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray eased through their opening contests in Miami.
Murray continued his excellent early season form with a 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory over American Paul Goldstein in the second round, while Nadal beat Brazil's Ricardo Mello 7-6 (9-7) 6-2.
Blake, the eighth-seed, hit back after dropping the first set on a tie-break but Serra raised his game once more to clinch a 7-6 (10-8) 2-6 6-3 victory.
Belgian Olivier Rochus recorded a 6-3 6-4 victory against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, while thirteenth seed David Ferrer had few problems in seeing off Juan Monaco 6-2 6-2.
Murray, the 12th seed, showed few signs of the ankle and hip injuries which contributed to his semi-final loss in Indian Wells last week as he recorded a straight-sets victory.
In the WTA event, Samantha Stosur enjoyed a solid 6-2 6-2 win over Olga Poutchkova while second seed Justin Henin also cruised past Vania King 6-4 6-1.
