Mason Goes To The Jets
August 7th 2011 05:03
Derrick Mason is headed to the New York Jets. After he was cut from the Baltimore Raven last weeks, he arrived on Thursday to meet with team officials, took a physical and returned to his Nashville home to make the decision. Mason said, “After a lot of very thoughtful and careful consideration, conversations with my family and prayer, I have decided to sign with the New York Jets. “I'm looking forward to working under Rex Ryan and rejoining some familiar faces.” Mason knows Rex Ryan, a former Raven assistant, from their years in Baltimore. Ryan did not seem to optimistic about the Jets' chances, since other teams wanted Mason. His two former teams, the Ravens and the Titans, were interested in Mason. The team had yet to make its announcement about Mason. The deal is reported to be for two years. The addition of Mason adds a stunning makeover to the Jets' receiving core. Five days, the Jets signed Plaxico Burress. The Jets resigned Santonio Holmes. Mason will probably be the Jets' number three receiver. He's quick in and out of his breaks and can be effective against zone coverage. He will be used in the slot. On his twitter account, Mason wrote: “Jet fuel is full time to fly!!!!” Mason also tweeted about receiving catches from Joe Flacco to Mark Sanchez, “Going from one young gun to another!! Hahahahahaha.” The Jets' rookie receiver, Jeremy Kerley, who's been wearing No. 85, tweeted that he will give up his jersey number to Mason out of respect. Mason has an impressive resume that should make the Jets happy that they acquired him. He is the only player in the NFL to produce at least 5,000 total yards and 11,000 receiving yards, and his 924 career receptions rank 12th in NFL history. Mason is the Ravens' all-time leading receiver in yards and receptions. He owns the top three reception seasons in Baltimore franchise history and also posted four of his eight career 1,000 yard campaigns with the Ravens, the four other being with the Titans.
