Matchday 2: UEFA Champions League
October 12th 2010 06:33
I apologise in advance for the late posting of the Matchday 2 results but it has been a very hectic past couple of weeks but I'm endeavouring to be more up to date in future
Group A
Tottenham 4 - 1 FC Twente
Inter Milan 4 - 0 Werder Bremen
It was a very high standard night and one of my proclaimed "group of deaths" has certainly been turned on its head with these 2 astonishing results. Tottenham's win was amazing despite being reduced to 10 men with the sending off of Rafael Van Der Vaart and as for Inter, I never knew they could score goals and certainly didn't tip them to score 4 against Bremen
Group B
Hapoel Tel Aviv 1 - 3 Lyon
Schalke 2 - 0 Benfica
This group has certainly turned out to be predictable with Lyon comfortably leading the pack and Schalke and Benfica battling for 2nd place. It's advantage Schalke though courtesy of their win but Lyon are looking impressive despite their issues in the French league (currently sitting in 17th place)
Group C
Valencia 0 - 1 Man United
Rangers 1 - 0 Bursaspor
A tough defensive night in Europe as the favourites in both matches secured the necessary win by the odd goal. Rangers seem to be the defensive team in the group while Man United are struggling to win away from home in the early stages of the season.
Group D
Rubin Kazan 1 - 1 Barcelona
Panathinaikos 0 - 2 FC Copenhagen
They've done it again. This is the 3rd time, unfashionable club Rubin Kazan have played the might of Barcelona and the 3rd time they've emerged with points after a win and a draw last season. I think teams should be looking at Rubin in a bid to beat Barcelona. Surprisingly also, Copenhagen are top of this group but I don't expect it to last
Group E
FC Basel 1 - 2 Bayern Munich
Roma 2 - 1 CFR Cluj
Same scoreline in both matches with the favourites getting up and starting to assert themself on the group currently sitting first and second. Good to see Bayern Munich doing well because their league form is horrid thus far (same way they started last season) and Roma needed that win after their loss on opening day
Group F
Spartak Moskva 3 - 0 Žilina
Chelsea 2-0 Marseille
I'm rather surprised at how this group is playing out to be honest. I tipped Chelsea and Marseille to make the Round of 16 but instead I'm finding Spartak Moscow as the favourites to join Chelsea barring a horror collapse. This group looks pretty close to sealed after 2 games although Spartak still have to play Chelsea. If they can emerge from those games with at least a point or 2, they will be definate favourites to join Chelsea in the knockout rounds
Group G
Auxerre 0 - 1 Real Madrid
Ajax 1 - 1 Milan
This is the definate "group of death" and it's living up to its reputation although I get the sinking feeling that the current top 2 in this group (Madrid and Milan) will qualify for the Round of 16. Next 2 matchdays are vital in determining who will get 3rd and a spot in the knockout stages of the Europa League
Group H
Partizan Belgrade 1 - 3 Arsenal
Braga 0 - 3 Shakhtar Donetsk
The 2 group favourites both secured very impressive wins away from home and this is one group I can comfortably say is sealed. Partizan Belgrade and Braga are way too outclassed for this group and the next 2 matchdays will also determine which team plays in the Europa League
Overall the stats for Matchday 2 are as follows
Goals: 42
Goals Per Match: 2.63
Teams are starting to assert themselves and by the end of the next matchday, we could have our first confirmed qualifiers for the knockout stages.
