Nicklaus Says Don't Crown Rory Yet
July 10th 2011 17:35
Jack Nicklaus, the man who won the most major in golf's history with 18, said, it is too early to label Rory McIlroy, golf's next superstar. McIlroy has become the hottest thing for golf since winning his first major title, which was the U.S. Open at Congressional by eight shots last month. Many believe a new era of dominance from McIlroy, trying to fill the void left by injured Tiger Woods, but Nicklaus sounded a note of caution ahead of next week's British Open at Sandwich. He told BBC today, “Don't anoint him as the crown prince yet. He has won one major. When he starts to win two, three, or four, then you can say he's the guy we've got to watch, period.” Not only has the number four ranked won just one major, but has three tournament wins in his professional career. Nicklaus thinks McIlory will win a lot of majors in his career, because he says, “Rory is a very talented young man who's been a factor in every one of the majors over the last year.” McIlroy is the outright favorite heading into the British Open in Royal St. George's. Tiger Woods will miss the British Open, trying to recover from injuries to his left knee and Achilles' tendon. He has slipped to number 17 in the world, but Nicklaus say there is life in his 35 year old man. Nicklaus said, “He's a very determined and talented young man, and I think he's determined to get himself healthy. He's still plenty young enough to play a lot of good golf. I think you'll see a lot from Tiger. Whether he overhauls my record or not, it will be interesting to watch.”
