Opening 3 rounds of the ANZ Championship
April 8th 2010 04:22
So anyway today I thought I'd dig into the ANZ Championship and provide a bit of an update on how things are going. For those who don't know, the ANZ Championship is a competition for 5 Australian and 5 New Zealand netball teams. Seasons are played over 13 games and then there's a finals series.
There are 10 teams in the competition. These teams are
Adelaide Thunderbirds
West Coast Fever
Queensland Firebirds
NSW Swifts
Melbourne Vixens
Waikato Bay Of Plenty Magic
Northern Mystics
Central Pulse
Canterbury Tactix
Southern Steel
The 3rd edition of the ANZ Championship started 3 weeks ago and my word, the standard of the competition continues to rise. Tempered with this is criticism that defenders are getting away with murder in the goal circle but still, for those who claim it's a soft game, if you haven't seen Sharelle McMahon (Vixens) play, you'd know it's anything but soft.
So far we're 3 rounds in and there have been a couple of surprise results
Round 1
Mystics 55 defeated Thunderbirds 52
Steel 46 defeated Fever 44
Firebirds 47 lost to Swifts 50
Tactix 54 defeated Pulse 48
Vixens 48 defeated WBOP Magic 40
Round 2
Pulse 50 lost to Mystics 61
Thunderbirds 38 lost to Swifts 45
Vixens 53 defeated Firebirds 46
WBOP Magic 47 defeated Steel 41
Fevel 62 defeated Tactix 44
Round 3
Mystics 46 lost to WBOP Magic 55
Firebirds 40 lost to Thunderbirds 41
Tactix 53 lost to Swifts 56
Steel 56 defeated Pulse 44
Fever 50 lost to Vixens 64
With these results, the ladder sits as follows
Vixens 6 121.32
Swifts 6 109.42
Steel 4 105.93
WBOP Magic 4 105.19
----------------------------- --------------
Mystics 4 103.18
Fever 2 101.30
Thunderbirds 2 93.57
Tactix 2 90.96
Firebirds 0 92.36
Pulse 0 83.04
The defending champions (Vixens) look the team to beat again although they've been joined by a Swifts outfit still smarting from their amazing fall from grace last season. After winning in season 1, the Swifts slipped to 8th with injuries and the dreaded premiership hangover affecting them. As for the bottom teams, the Firebirds have been decidedly unlucky losing all 3 by a combined 11 goals, however the Pulse have been truely pathetic and continue to be truely pathetic.
More updates will be forthcoming during the season.
