Perry Wins NHL MVP
June 23rd 2011 12:21
Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks brings home the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night. He scored a league's best of 50 goals. Perry was surprised to win the MVP, because it seemed like the scoring champion, Daniel Sedin, was more of the favorite to win the award. Sedin was trying to complete an MVP double dip after his twin brother and teammate Henrik Sedin took the Hart Trophy last year. Perry said, “You didn't know what to expect coming in, and then all of a sudden you hear your name and you're like, 'Oh.'” He was given the MVP trophy during the two hour NHL awards ceremony. During capturing his goal title, Perry scored 19 times in 16 games which moved Anaheim from 11th place to fourth in the Western Conference. He got 67 of the 126 first place votes while Sedin got 51 first place votes. Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis, who won the Lady Byng Trophy for gentlemanly and excellent play, was the third MVP finalist. He only got one first place vote. Even though the Sedins did not take home back to back MVPs, they did however take home the last two scoring titles. The scoring title earned Daniel Sedin the Art Ross Trophy, and players voted him most valuable for the Ted Lindsay Award. He won the scoring title with 104 points-41 goals. Asked how he felt about not following his brother in winning the MVP Award, Daniel Sedin said he wasn't disappointed. He said, “Corey had an amazing season, a great finish and he carried his team a lot of times.”
