Peter Brock killed in car crash...

September 8th 2006 05:30
Peter Brock is dead.

Western Australia police have confirmed champion car racer Peter Brock was killed in single car accident during a rally race today.

Brock, an Australian icon and undisputed 'King of the Mountain', died after his car collided with a tree.

The accident occured south-west of Perth during the Targa West Rally. There was no other vehicles involved in the accident.

The death of Brock comes less than a week after Steve Irwin was killed during a diving accident off the shores of Port Douglas.

Brock was a nine time winner of the Bathurst V8 endurance race.

Rest In Peace Brocky. Another Australian icon that has left this Earth far too soon.

Peter Brock killed during a Western Australian car race.
RIP - Peter Brock. Vale 05.

This is a tragedy.

On a personal note, Peter 'Brocky' Brock was the Michael Schumacher of Australian V8 motorsport and a role-model for so many up and coming drivers.

Brock was special to me. On my first ever trip to Bathurst for the great race, it was Peter Brock who took the chequered flag. He died a nine-time winner of Australia's greatest race.

First Steve Irwin, now Peter Brock - even from an outsider's perspective it all gets a bit too much too handle

I can't believe this! It can't be happened? Irwin, now Brock?

Cars all over Melbourne have turned their headlights on as an instant mark of respect for Australia's number one motorsport legend.

RIP Brocky.

I'm at a loss...

This is awful, what a week it's been, it's like Princess Diana's death plus one.

Argh bit too much to handle but you can't help but wonder who is next...

We've lost two Aussie heros in the space of a week.

RIP Brocky and my condolences go out to his family.

He was driving a Daytone Coupe and from the looks of it, the drivers door collided flush with the tree.

Brock lost control of the car on a tight hair-pin bend at the end of a high speed section of the course.

Brocky loved Australia, loved motorsport and best of all loved life. On the two articles he autographed for me, he wrote 'make the most of life' both times.

Like Irwin, at least, Brock died doing what he loved most?

Well said everyone. Brocky was a true icon and a damn fine bloke. He will be sorely missed and I'm sure there will be some fitting tributes waiting for him on Bathurst weekend.

I think the AFL might recognise him during the finals this weekend... he was a passionate magpie supporter.

i didn't know he was 61-years-old tho? jeepers... he looked about 45!

Brocky was always a bit of a spunk! It's so sad, his family and friends would be so devestated.

You know, with both Irwin & Brock's death so close and both of them going out doing something they truly loved, it kind of makes you more determined to live your life to the fullest, reach your dreams and never have any regrets.

RIP Brocky

Well said Cinico...

How many times are we told 'don't take anything for granted'?

Anyone thinking about giving up their 9-5 and start doing the things they love?

"that's terrible news. don't bad things normally come in threes? i feel like asking who's next?"

Technically I guess we already had the third, depending on how you count it. Don Chipp, founder of the Democrats was actually the first one to go.

So we've now lost one in his 80's, sadly a man in his 40's and now one in his early 60's.

Sorry, for some reason it posted twice even though I only hit the button once, and now I can't delete it.

Hi MelissaA,

Good point - But do you put Don Chipp in the same category as Irwin and Brock?

(It's weird writing "Irwin and Brock", two household names, who, this time last week were still walking the Earth)

Chipp was an influential politician, but a household name?

It's a matter of perspective but a croc lover and a petrol-head would probably ask, Don who?

Comment by Campbell

September 8th 2006 11:15
Don Chipp, Colin Thiele, Steve Irwin, Peter Brock.

Four influential and iconic (in their own fields, at the very least) Australians dying within the last fortnight. It's not been a very good couple of weeks, huh?

September 8th 2006 11:19
Colin Thiele died??? I have to watch the news more often.

Comment by Glen Atwell

September 8th 2006 11:21
Campbell,

Good point, but where do we draw the line?

I think Brock and Irwin were heads and shoulders above Chipp and Thiele in terms of household recognition and being the best in their field.

Irwin and Brock were the idols of primary school children - and their parents.

Comment by Campbell

September 8th 2006 11:24
Colin Thiele's death was largely overshadowed by Steve Irwin's, Cinico.

Definitely Irwin as well as Brock were legends to Australians at large in the sense that Don Chipp and Colin Thiele weren't, but it's undeniable that each one of these people were pivotal in their fields of work: politics, writing, racing and enviromentalism.

Glen, that's why I said it depends on how you count it, but if you go by iconic australian men across the eras then he counts. 25 years from now when kids are going through theoir history books, most of them won't know who either Brocky, Steve irwin or Don Chipp were regardless of their public standing.

It's only us who are around now who can see any difference - the biggest difference being that Steve Irwin and Peter Brock were more of a celebrity status than Don Chipp but I'm sure he cut it in his time.

As for Colin Thiele, oh my goodness, I hadn't heard about that one till reading these posts. I can't believe that the media would totally skim over it just because of Steve Irwin's death. How times have changed.

This truely is a sad week for Australia.

Wow, so many deaths, so little time... Can't believe how fast its all happening. Whats stranger is I never knew of it until just then. Thanks for mentioning...

Hi Ahmed,

It is a werid situation isn't it? The moment I heard Irwin had died reminded me of a feeling I hadn't felt since the first twin tower collapsed on 9/11.

MelissaA - I agree, but I discount politicians in terms of media coverage, they get cameras on their morning walks etc.

At least the Irwin family won't have as many media packs hounding them day in and day out.

I had the pleasure of meeting Peter Brock twice during his racing career i found him to be a kind and considerate manwho never snobbed any one off. He was always happy to meet you and would treat you with respect it wasnt just a job to him it was what he enjoyed doing. I think they should rename the bathurst 1000 to The Peter Brock 1000 in honour of the best man ever to grace motor racing. Rest in Peace Peter Brock you will be missed but not forgotten.

Comment by Pete Harrison

September 10th 2006 05:36
This may sound tasteless, and I really don't mean it to, but I have a theory that people in the public eye die in batches of three - in this case, first the Democrats founder, then Steve Irwin, now Peter Brock. It seems to happen on every occasion. I know it seems like a tactless thing to say after people have died, but next time someone famous dies, notice how two others will follow.

I also have another theory that people die famously on dates connected to my family's birthdays, but its probably coincedental that Dians died on my mum's birthday, and my birthday is tomorrow, September 11.

Well said Mr T,

Brock was ultra-approachable despite his tag of 'Mr Perfect'. Great suggestion about renaming the 1000. Word is that something is in the works. I'm also led to believe the new Holden Blimp will lend itself to the memory of Brocky over the next few weeks.

Pete - Not tasteless at all! Don Chipp, Steve Irwin and Peter Brock all dying in quick succession is one out of the box. Add Colin Thiele and there is four.

Tactless? Maybe, but death is reality after all. We are born to die.

On top of it all, it was on this night a few years ago Sandra Sully interrupted Sports Tonight to commence 24 continuous hours of 9/11 coverage.

September 10th 2006 07:48
oh god don't remind me of the 24/7 9/11 stuff... 23 of those hours were spent on nothing, NOTHING, there was no news at all!

wasn't footage of the event and aftermath news enough?

perhaps not in the sense of the word, but the media was simply conveying images of the most important event of the 21st century.

it was history in the making?

Its all well and good to see a building collapse once, but to see it collapse everytime, especially when I want to watch my day time cartoons (as it was back in the day) it did get a little annoying.

Comment by Glen Atwell

September 10th 2006 11:33
i see your point.

however the magnitude of the event warranted the extensive coverage (and repitition).

when thousands of people are turned to dust in an instant, the new-age sign of respect is 'uninterrupted coverage'.

Honestly I didn't see it as that big of an event, while it was a lot of people to die in one go these massacres happen all the time in some countries...

You mean misty? Yeah, back then I was still a tween... ah yes... memories of being bullied at highschool... well not really but it feels like it.

I remember someone came late to class, his excuse was 'the news'. Now this guy was always late, so I don't know how the hell the teacher bought the excuse this time... I mean really, just capitalise on everything...

Looks like Bathurst is a good chance of being renamed the Brock 1000 this year.

Not in an official sense, rebranding would be a nightmare, but at least in a spiritual sense.

Great idea.

Comment by Glen Atwell

Looks like it's not a good chance to renamed.

NSW Premier, Morris Iemma, went directly to the Bathurst City Council, instead of first approaching race organisers.

Of course, the Bathurst Council have no say over the V8 naming rights.

Super Cheap Auto sponsor the Bathurst 1000 *I think*.

When I was told Steve Irwin died, I had to ask - who is that?

'crocodile man'

The face in the shadow no longer in shadow but nor was it Mona Lisa-portrait.

And then I heard about Brock's death. The name and face familiar, but again no image burned to the retina.

Fame and feat mean nothing to death. He will continue watching from his unseen hill , playing his tune - we will all dance.

i will not say i mourn, for i do not. I leave that for the people who loved them. It is only there's to claim.

hi anonymous,

great comment and very well said. i agree that mourning is best left to the grieving family and friends.

the rest of us content with simply remembering what made the deceased so great and of such value to the community.

very nice!

i once heard brocky say "i'd rather spew in a holden than drive a ford" so it's safe to say he would have been turning in his coffin on the way to his destiny.

wow, he said that? What a passionate bloke, I bet he's single handedly responsible for holdens succes over ford these past few years.
