Playstation 3: Formula One vs Ridge Racer vs Gran Turismo HD
March 24th 2007 08:27
The Playstation 3 has finally arrived in Australia to battle the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 for console supremecy!
The three systems, PS3 $999, Wii $399 and 360 $649 offer an interesting perspective on next (or now) generation gaming.
Today, Sport Talk looks at motor racing on the Playstation 3.
At launch, the PS3 is the king of racing simulation. Formula One launched with the console, Gran Turismo HD is available as a playable download and Ridge Racer 7 can also be downloaded.
Formula One is a crisp, clean and impressive launch title for the PS3, the demo is tight, sounds great and looks amazing. But with driver assists on, the game feels very arcade-ish. For example, 'steer assist' and 'brake assist' - what does that leave me to do?
Ridge Racer is not nice. The PSP version is better. Someone needs to tell the developers that hot graphics and visuals do not improve the overall experience for gamers. Sliding around corners and drifting everywhere is fun, but this is RR7. Please stop making these games.
Gran Turismo HD is elegant, stylish and revitalised. The PS3 controller now has trigger style R2 buttons and gear changing feels sensational in GT HD. The demo is deep, featuring more than 20 unlockable cars, but only one track. The option to race forward, and backward, adds to its lifespan.
Rating:
F1: 7/10
RR7: 2/10
GT HD: 9/10
Bring on Gran Turismo, will this series ever die?
