Roger Federer wins French Open 2009
June 6th 2009 00:54
It's a headline Roger Federer is desperate to read.
On Sunday, Federer will meet Robin Soderling in the men's singles final of the 2009 French Open at Roland Garros.
If Federer wins, he will cement his status as the best tennis player to have ever played.
Federer is yet to win a French Open and with Nadal out of the tournament in the fourth round, at the hands of Soderling, the Swiss maestro has his best chance on Sunday.
Federer is a $1.27 favourite to take the title, with Soderling's odds drifting to around $4.20.
Soderling has won respect from fellow players, commentators and fans with his line-to-line hitting in the past fortnight.
His win against Fernando Gonzalez in the semi-final was nothing short of amazing. After leading two sets to zero Soderling looked home in three, but survived a fightback from Gonzalez and Soderling eventually won in five.
Federer has also survived serious scared. The five set marathon against Tommy Haas was as much a mental win for Federer as it was physical.
His wins against Monfils and Del Potro were also as tough as nails.
Federer will beat Soderling in the final of the 2009 French Open, but Soderling will probably push him to four or five sets. Soderling was battling nerves against Gonzalez in the third set, and I imagine will have to fight the same battle in the final against Federer.
Federer won't miss his chance at tennis immortality. This tournament is his.
