June 20th 2011 00:11
After having a four shot lead going into Sunday at the Masters in April and losing it by finishing 15th , Rory McIlroy wins the U.S. Open by eight strokes while leading by eight stokes heading into Sunday. Before McIlroy, no player had been lower than 12 under at the U.S. Open. This win makes it first major for McIlroy; he is the second youngest player to win his first major at the age of 22 years and 46 days. Today, on the tenth hole, McIlroy hit a shot above the hole that spun back and stopped an inch from going in the hole. He made birdie on the hole to put him at 17 under. On the twelveth hole, he shot a bogey to put him back at 16 under. Rory McIlroy finished with 16 under to take the U.S. Open title. After breaking the 36 and 54 hole records, He needed to shoot 1 over 72 to break the 72 hole scoring record. Some players were very pleased with Rory's performance. One of his native counterparts, Ireland's Padraig Harrington said, “If you are going to talk about someone challenging Jack Nicklaus' record, there's your man.” Luke Donald, who finished five over par said, “I think he has probably the most talent I've ever seen from a golfer.” “Lovely to watch him play, such a fluid motion, and he hits it far.” Phil Mickelson, who finished seven over par said, “You can tell that Rory has had this type of talent in him for some time now, and to see him putting it together is pretty neat to see.” Graeme McDowell said, “Nothing this kid does ever surprises me; He is the best player I've ever seen.” Rory McIlory's win today makes him the second straight Northern Irishmen to win the U.S. Open championship. Graeme McDowell won it last year, edging out Gregory Havret by a stroke to become the first man from Northern Ireland to win the U.S. Open.
