Round 1 AFL Premiership 2010 Review
March 30th 2010 06:55
So after a long summer, football was finally back in town and what a sensational weekend it proved to be.
The round kicked off on Thursday night with Richmond taking on Carlton and frankly, for an opening match to the season, it was ordinary at best. Last year Carlton creamed Richmond by 83 points and this year they also won, but this time by 56 points. Carlton's forward line set up was actually quite exciting with Setanta O'Hailpin, Eddie Betts and Chris Yarran each booting 3 goals. As for Richmond, it was the typical error-riddled Tigers that we've come to know and love and despite being within 19 points at half-time, the Tigers were never really in the hunt with a goalless last quarter summing up their night
Richmond 9.10.64 lost to Carlton 18.12.120
Friday night saw Essendon take on Geelong and not many people gave the Bombers a chance. After a slow start the Bombers completely overran Geelong to the point where they were 23 points up midway through the 3rd quarter. Neagle then had the chance to make things close to impossible for Geelong when he marked 30 from goal but then played on and got ran down. That was the turning point as Geelong booted the next 9 goals and eventually cruised to a tough 31 point win. Ablett showed no ill-effects of his brownlow win or the constant Gold Coast talk as he racked up 34 possessions.
Geelong 19.11.125 defeated Essendon 13.16.94
Saturday afternoon saw a frankly embarrassing effort from Melbourne. Everyone was saying that there were no excuses for the Demons but really, they were pathetic and insipid. At one stage in this game, Hawthorn led by over 80 points and despite making a comeback of sorts, kicking 6 of the last goals of the game, the Demons were still outclassed by 56 points. Brown and Roughead booted 3 for the winners while Green and Petterd booted 2 for Melbourne
Melbourne 8.13.61 lost to Hawthorn 17.15.117
ANZ Stadium on Saturday night saw an absolute thriller between Sydney and St Kilda. It was an extraordinary game and when you look at the final result, the difference was the goalkicking. Justin Koschitzke was reported for a head-high hit and St Kilda took a long time to get going. They were led very well by Nick Riewoldt who kicked 4 goals however Adam Goodes provided the highlights of the night when first he soccered a goal from 30m out and then soccered a cross from the boundary line straight to teammate Daniel Bradshaw. The sight of Paul Roos losing his rag and swearing made it a night to remember
Sydney 13.10.88 lost to St Kilda 15.6.96
Meanwhile, also on Saturday night it was the debut of Brownlova in the Brisbane forward line (Jonathan Brown and Brendan Fevola) however for 3 quarters, West Coast managed to keep Brisbane honest. They played the smarter football and looked for all money like they could cause an upset however the last quarter saw those hopes go begging as the Lions booted 7 goals to 2 to win by 32 points. Brownlova booted 8.9 between them and this double act has the potential to absolutely destroy teams this year.
Brisbane 16.18.114 defeated West Coast 12.10.82
It was a soggy Sunday afternoon at AAMI Stadium as the Power and Roos tangled on a drizzly afternoon. Port Adelaide showcased both sides of their personality with an extraordinary first half which saw them bound out to a 44 point lead at half-time. They extended it to 50 points at one stage in the 3rd quarter before the fadeout side of their personality kicked in. They saw their lead chipped away in a 8 goal to 3 second half and eventually hung on to win by 14 points against a fast-finishing Nth Melbourne.
Port Adelaide 13.18.96 defeated North Melbourne 12.10.82
The self-proclaimed match of the round saw losing preliminary finalists Collingwood and Western Bulldogs play. The Dogs were all the rage following their NAB Cup win, not to mention the recruitment of Barry Hall but Collingwood were also the rage, following the recruitment of Darren Jolly and Luke Ball. Collingwood bounded out to a massive lead in the first half before the Dogs closed the gap. The 3rd quarter saw the Bulldogs dominate but bugger up chance after chance and then Collingwood were able to bound away to a 6 goal win. Brad Johnson's 350th game was spoiled but Collingwood won't care.
Western Bulldogs 13.15.93 lost to Collingwood 19.15.129
Meanwhile on Sunday night in the only match that I cared about, my Fremantle Dockers took on the Adelaide Crows. It took 21 minutes for a goal to be scored as both teams played at a finals like intensity. From there it was mostly one way traffic as the upstarts from Freo suprirsed the Crows and yours truely with an exciting brand of football. Despite a rally from the Crows in the 3rd quarter, they ran out of legs and Freo avoided a last quarter fadeout to win by 56 points
Fremantle 17.16.118 defeated Adelaide 9.8.62
I got 7 winners in the tipping this week and missed out on Collingwood
