Round 1 WNBL Review

October 14th 2010 05:29
This year, Sport Talk is committing to an expanded coverage of the WNBL (Women's National Basketball League) by providing a round by round summary of the games and also starting the very first Sport Talk Award.

At the end of the regular season, I will be announcing the Sport Talk WNBL Player of the Year and is based on a 3-2-1 voting system which is determined by a Dream Team type points structure

The points structure is as follows

Points - 1
Offensive Rebounds - 2
Defensive Rebounds - 1
Assists - 2
Steals - 2
Turnovers - -2

Blocked Shots - 2
Fouls - -1

In my view, this point structure doesn't just reward those that score big but focuses on their all-round game. Hypothetically a player could score 8 points but because they've had 12 assists and 3 steals, they suddenly can score 38 points based on the system and pick up votes.

Anyway on with the round review

Adelaide 80 lost to Dandenong 94
Friday night saw a new revolution commence with the Dandenong Rangers travelling west to play the Adelaide Lightning. The Rangers had a new look team and also a new coaching 'dream team' of Mark Wright and Cheryl Chambers. It was also the reunion for Tracey Gahan, Samantha Woosnam and Jessica Foley as they took on their old side for the first time.

Being a convertee to the WNBL and the Dandenong Rangers (followed with great interest for 2 seasons now), this match was rather unprecedented for a couple of reasons

1. Dandenong out-rebounded the opposition 45-34. This doesn't happen often.
2. Dandenong scored 94 points. This also doesn't happen often.

Adelaide had a solid spread of scorers with 4 players making double digits but the difference in this game was Dandenong's ability to convert second chance opportunities and also their depth with more overall contributors

Votes
3 - Kathleen McLeod (Dandenong)
2 - Tracey Gahan (Dandenong)
1 - Nicole Seekamp (Adelaide)

Townsville 69 lost to Sydney 75
In the second match of a big opening night of the WNBL Season, Sydney and Townsville played out a thriller. It was very tight in the first half with neither side being able to clear a decent margin however the game changed in the second half with astonishing results.

Townsville took command in the opening minutes of the third quarter to build a 10 point lead and look very impressive. Sydney then took the game by the scruff of the neck from that point onwards, turning that defecit into a 6 point win at the end of the night.

Sydney had Amy Denson score 28 points while Townsville had Amy Lewis lead all scorers with 29 points

Votes
3 - Amy Lewis (Townsville)
2 - Amy Denson (Sydney)
1 - Eva Afeaki (Sydney)

AIS 64 lost to Logan 87
This was the last match of a super Friday night of WNBL action and as is the customary scenario with the AIS, they copped a routine belting.

If the game wasn't all over at quarter-time (Logan leading by 17 points) then it certainly was all over at half-time with Logan leading by 27 points.

The second half was a training drill for Logan but to the credit of the AIS, they managed to win the second half and they fought out the game really well.

Emma Randall and Sarah Graham led all scorers with 21 points for Logan while Gretal Tippett was a standout for the AIS with 15 points

Votes
3 - Emma Randall (Logan)
2 - Kristen Veal (Logan)
1 - Gretal Tippett (AIS)

Bulleen 71 lost to Canberra 79
It was the Grand Final rematch down at the Veneto Club and the depressing thing for Bulleen is that it had the same result as the Grand Final last season.

Even worse for Bulleen is that point guard Sharin Milner went down with a suspected shoulder injury following a scramble late in the first half.

It could be argued that the Milner injury was the turning point in this game as Canberra went from 1 point down at half-time to securing the win with a 26-11 quarter.

Bulleen to their credit (and to epitomise the approach they have under Tom Maher) continued to fight the game out and reduce the margin to a more respectible 8 points by the end of the game

Carly Bishop led scorers for Canberra with 17 points while Rachel Jarry led all scorers for Bulleen with 19 points

Votes
3 - Elizabeth Cambage (Bulleen)
2 - Michelle Cosier (Canberra)
1 - Carly Wilson (Canberra)

West Coast 48 lost to Dandenong 77
It was another new revolution in the west on Saturday night as the revamped West Coast Wonders (formerly Perth Lynx) took to the court for the first time.

New coach, new look side but unfortunately the same old result as West Coast were unable to take advantage of any fatigue Dandenong might have been suffering following their win against Adelaide.

Dandenong won every quarter and West Coast committed an astonishing 33 turnovers and were limited to just 56 field goal attempts.

There's no way you can win a game of basketball with those stats but really, this Dandenong side look very impressive indeed

Melissa Marsh was the game leading scorer for Perth with 18 while for Dandenong, Kathleen McLeod led scorers with 15 points .

Votes
3 - Kathleen McLeod (Dandenong)
2 - Abby Bishop (Dandenong)
1 - Samantha Woosnam (Dandenong)

Bendigo 43 lost to Canberra 64
This match on Sunday saw the most astonishing fadeout, you'd ever be likely to see. You'd usually see it from the likes of the AIS or West Coast but no way would you have imagined that Bendigo were capable of such tragedy.

Bendigo led 20-13 at quarter time as Canberra were clearly suffering the affects of the win against Bulleen but then the game changed dramatically.

Canberra lifted defensively while Bendigo just fell apart at both ends of the court as can be shown by the quarter by quarter splits

20 - 13
9 - 13
8 - 15
6 - 23

Pretty damming that a team can only score 23 points in the last 3 quarters and also really damming that a team could shoot at just 27% from the field and be out-rebounded 46-30

Marianna Tolo led the game scoring with 19 points for Canberra while a symbol of Bendigo's ineptness was that the top scorer was Jasmine Finnegan and Tess Madgen with just 8 points each.

Votes
3 - Marianna Tolo (Canberra)
2 - Carly Wilson (Canberra)
1 - Alison Lacey (Canberra)

Logan 72 lost to Sydney 76
Both these teams were backing up from Friday night wins and as such, this match was to give one of these teams the early advantage

As ridiculous as this sounds, the game was won in the opening quarter when Sydney led 24-15 at quarter time.

From there, Logan took control but every time they made a run, Sydney would reply and everything they tried, Sydney would match it

Logan were able to reduce the margin to 4 and despite having their chances, couldn't get closer as Sydney emerged with the 4 point win

Sarah Graham led all scorers with 23 points for Logan while Natalie Stafford led Sydney with 18 points

Votes
3 - Kristen Veal (Logan)
2 - Sarah Graham (Logan)
1 - Katie-Rae Ebzery

So the leaderboard of votes in the inaugural Sport Talk WNBL Player of the Year award is as follows

6 Kathleen McLeod Dandenong
5 Kristan Veal Logan
3 Emma Randall Logan
3 Amy Lewis Townsville
3 Elizabeth Cambage Bulleen
3 Carly Wilson Canberra
3 Marianna Tolo Canberra

So ends the Round 1 review of the WNBL
65
