Round 14 2010 AFL Premiership Season
July 8th 2010 07:19
Well Round 14 has been another dramatic round and at the end of the round, we have a new team on the bottom of the ladder and we still have a tight race for the top 4, top 8 and wooden spoon.
Anyway the round kicked off on a Thursday night at Etihad Stadium in what was billed as a blockbuster between Carlton and Brisbane due to it being Brendan Fevola's first game against the Blues in Melbourne. Sadly this title was a mirage as both Brendan Fevola and Jonathan Brown were ruled out with injury. Without their goal-scoring options, the Lions started off well to lead by 13 points at quarter-time only to see Carlton overturn the margin and lead by 20 at half-time. The game became entirely forgettable from this point on and Brisbane despite their best efforts were unable to match a fitter Carlton and recorded a 55 point win in a game that was awful to watch and marred by 10 50m penalties. Eddie Betts kicked 5 goals for Carlton while Aaron Cornelius and Todd Banfield kicked 2 each for Brisbane
Carlton 18.12.120 defeated Brisbane 9.11.65
Friday night saw the in-form Hawthorn take on an inconsistent Bulldogs in what promised to be an absolute cracker. In that regard it certainly lived up to its name and one of the best duels ever was witnessed between Lance Franklin and Brian Lake. Still this match was your classic close game with the margin never getting bigger than 12 points and really, it deserved a draw. The Bulldogs led by 6 points at quarter-time, 3 points at half-time, 5 points at three-quarter time but when it counted, they just couldn't find the goals, kicking 2.5 in the last quarter. Meanwhile Hawthorn took full advantage of the Bulldogs kicking to somehow find themselves in front when it mattered and they were able to hang on despite a dramatic final minute. Lance Franklin booted 3 for the Hawks while Grant, Giansiracusa and Hall booted 2 for the Dogs.
Hawthorn 12.7.79 defeated Western Bulldogs 11.10.76
Saturday at Subiaco promised a mundane game between the Fremantle Dockers and Port Adelaide. The Power were sitting on a record 6 losses in a row while Freo were pushing for top 4 and this proved to be the case in a one-sided opening quarter as Freo led by 27 points at quarter-time. After extending the lead to 33 points, Freo dropped right off and the Power took full advantage to close the margin to 10 points at half-time. Freo were down to 20 with Grover (hamstring) and Fyfe (broken nose) gone for the game. The momentum was all with the Power but cometh the hour, cometh the man and Ryan Crowley proved to be that man. He booted the only 4 goals of the 3rd quarter as Freo held the Power goalless and continued their version of friendly fire to lead by 34 points at the last change. From there it was all academic as Freo cruised with a 5 goal to 1 last quarter only to see the win turn into horror as Michael Barlow broke his leg going for a "hospital pass." It really was a hollow victory for the 'Purple Haze.'
Fremantle 17.13.115 defeated Port Adelaide 8.10.58
Saturday night at Etihad was a scene from a horror show as Collingwood took on West Coast. It was looming as an absolute disaster at quarter-time with Collingwood leading by 39 points however West Coast came out and showed fight for a quarter, reducing the margin to 33 at half-time. Despite getting the margin to 30 in the 3rd quarter, that was the end of it as Collingwood blew the game right apart with a 9 goal to 1 third quarter, including Alan Didak kicking 3 goals in 90 seconds to lead by 79 points and then both teams played out time with Collingwood cruising to a massive win. Jolly and Dawes both kicked 4 goals for Collingwood while Mark Le Cras was the only one to offer any real resistance for West Coast kicking 3.
Collingwood 20.15.135 defeated West Coast 7.10.52
To continue the theme of "close Saturday night games" Adelaide and Essendon squared off at AAMI Stadium in what promised to be a very even game. Sadly it was anything but as Adelaide opened some real wounds in the first quarter with 7 goals to 1. They then backed up with a 5 goal to 1 second quarter to lead by an astonishing 61 points at half-time. With the game all over, it was a junk second half really with Adelaide extending their lead at every change to cruise to their biggest win of the year. Kurt Tippett was a star for the Crows with 6 goals while Patrick Ryder kicked 2 goals for Essendon. If the lack of intensity was bad enough for Essendon, it was even more astonishing that the Bombers finished with 3 more disposals than the Crows.
Adelaide 19.10.124 defeated Essendon 5.10.40
Sunday afternoon at Skilled Stadium saw Geelong take on North Melbourne in what looked on paper to be a one-sided game. North Melbourne however were disadvantaged from early in the first quarter when Jack Ziebell went off with a broken leg, leaving them with 21 for most of the game. As for Geelong, they shared the ball around and punished North for their errors. James Podsiadly kicked his mandatory 5 goals while the Geelong midfield taught North about possession. Geelong in fact, broke their own record for most possessions with 505. As for North, they fought the game out but really this reflected a last-quarter push which saw them kick the last 4 goals of the game. Podsiadly kicked 5 for Geelong while Lachlan Hansen kicked 4 for the Roos.
Geelong 14.14.98 defeated North Melbourne 9.9.63
Over at the MCG, it was a vital match between the Sydney Swans and Richmond Tigers, The Swans were looking to continue their run to September while the TIgers were looking to get off the bottom of the ladder. The game see-sawed throughout with Sydney slowly inching themselves ahead and in fact, led by 33 points midway through the 3rd quarter. From there though, they slowly faded out and Richmond, led by Jack Riewoldt, Chris Newman and Andrew Collins, fought their way back into the game. They kicked the last 3 goals of the 3rd quarter to trail by just 14 points and in the last quarter, kicked 5 goals to 2 to overrun a tired Sydney outfit. Jack Riewoldt was a star kicking 5 goals while Jarryd McVeigh kicked 3 goals for the Swans but it's fair to say that they'll be ruing their lack of accuracy when they were on top
Richmond 14.5.89 defeated Sydney 12.13.85
Meanwhile, to complete the round was the match between St Kilda and Melbourne. Melbourne promised to be harder and tougher at the ball for this game and it's fair to say that they achieved this aim. In fact, it appeared that St kilda were coming off fatigue from the blockbuster against Geelong and it took them a very long time to shake off Melbourne. It was a very mundane game and some of the skill errors were of a "What the hell?" type. Finally St Kilda were able to put the foot down and secure a comfortable win with a 4 goal to 1 last quarter. Melbourne won't be disheartened but St Kilda only really did enough to win. Steven Milne kicked 3 goals for St Kilda while Brad Green and Lynden Dunn both kicked 2 for the Demons.
St Kilda 15.10.100 defeated Melbourne 9.11.65
