AFL Round 14: Tips and Best Bets
June 27th 2008 05:10
Welcome back to Sport Talk and more importantly, welcome to AFL Round 14 - the dreaded split round!
Dreaded because it means for the next two weekends, we'll have less football to watch, dissect and discuss.
This weekend is less painful, six games of AFL action, before the remaining two bounce into action next Friday night and Saturday night.
Let's have a look at the odds, the best bets and tips!
Hawthorn v West Coast - MCG
Hawthorn 1.06 v West Coast 10.50
Richmond v Carlton - MCG
Richmond 1.75 v Carlton 2.15
Kangaroos v St Kilda - Gold Coast Stadium
Kangaroos 1.70 v St Kilda 2.20
Western Bulldogs v Port Adelaide - Darwin
Western Bulldogs 1.13 v Port Adelaide 6.40
Melbourne v Brisbane - MCG
Melbourne 4.85 v Brisbane 1.20
Fremantle v Essendon - Subiaco
Fremantle 1.50 v Essendon 2.67
Next weekend's early odds:
Adelaide 4.80 v Geelong 1.18 - AAMI Stadium
Sydney 1.47 v Collingwood 2.70 - ANZ Stadium
Sport Talk's Best Bet of the Round is Kangaroos to beat St Kilda at $1.70. Shop around for your odds, I think there will be some better value before game time.
I just prefer the Kangaroos over the Saints at the Gold Coast. It's a tough ground to play (well) on, it's narrow and doesn't really suit talls. North Melbourne's in and under ball magnets should shine. Harvey loves this ground.
This is how the Saints tried to sell their chances:
How can you consider it a home game if the side hasn't played there since 1989? North Melbourne will have a distinct home track advantage. They know the ground and often win there.
$1.75 about Richmond to beat the Blues represents some value for punters. The Tigers are underrated, and the Blues were playing above themselves before crashing back to earth against the Bombers last week. Richmond has a better side than Essendon, so expect the Tigers to beat the Blues.
If you can get odds $1.85 or better about the Tigers, jump on.
The Darwin game, Western Bulldogs v Port Adelaide might throw up a surprise. Port at $6 plus are good value, but only for something very small. Jason Akermanis grew up in Darwin and will have plenty of advice for his team mates on handling the top-end heat.
Break out the ice vests!
Essendon is good value at $2.40 to beat the Dockers in the west on Sunday. I don't rate Fremantle at all, and Essendon are travelling OK. If the game was in Melbourne, the odds would be reversed, so the questions punters should ask themselves is; can Essendon travel?
Matty Knights would be keen to shrug the 'can't travel' tag the Bombers have attracted over the past 10 years, so expect the Bombers to come out firing and lead at quarter time.

This is how the Saints tried to sell their chances:
St Kilda chief executive Archie Fraser says he is expecting a home crowd advantage when the side plays North Melbourne at Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast tomorrow night.
The game is officially recognised by the AFL as a Kangaroos home game.
Fraser says having former Gold Coast juniors Nick Riewoldt and Sam Gilbert on their roster should swing the crowd St Kilda's way.
"I know those boys are looking forward to coming back and we've got a very solid supporter group up here as well, which is great to be able to reward them as well with playing right in their back yard," Fraser said.
"We've got great support in south-east Queensland they pay their memberships each year and we're looking forward to hopefully a home crowd advantage against the Kangaroos on Saturday night."
Fraser says it has been 19 years since the club played on the Gold Coast and the team is excited to be playing there.
"We haven't played up here since '89 so I know the whole playing group were looking forward to getting up here and getting some good weather and taking home the four points in what's a very important game against North Melbourne".
